A Friends Carbon Monoxide Story...

DO YOU HAVE A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR IN YOUR HOUSE AND IF YOU DO,  HAVE YOU CHECKED THE BATTERIES??

Let me share with you what happened to my family and I last night.

We got home from a busy day about 8pm.....The girls were both at the house, telling us about their latest adventures!!!  We were eating dinner and our carbon monoxide detector went off.  Rog and I both looked at each other....he went off and changed the batteries, thinking it had been up for over a year with no battery change.  We didn't give it much other thought.  NO ONE FELT SICK....Melissa was upset and said "you shouldn't ignore that".  But we progressed along with dinner.  It had never gone off before.

About an hour later, it went off again.  This time I was a little nervous.  I had a slight headache, but I've been working a lot of long days and it's not unusual for me to have a headache.  I called Melissa's friend Alex who serves as a volunteer on the Lancaster Fire Dept.  He said, call 911 and they will send someone out with a tester.  So I did....about 9:35pm I call 911 and they dispatched the Whitefield Fire Dept to the house.

I know most of the guys on the Fire Dept, they were teasing me...."If you wanted to see me, you should have just called"....they didn't seem too concerned.  I was starting to feel a little foolish, calling this guys out at 9:30 at night.  Well....from here it get's interesting....they go into the bedroom where we have the CO2 detector is installed and they got a reading....now they want to see the furnace....when they get there the meter is going off at the GARAGE door.  Scary stuff.

The furnace guy comes, makes some adjustments and says we are ok (this is 12:30am).  By now Melissa and Megan have gone to Rex's house. We get an ok that we can stay in the house and off to bed we go.  4am...it's going off.  No one feels sick....we open a window.  7am...off again.  We call the Co2 detector company.....they say vacuum the sensor off and change the batteries to a certain kind.  So we do....11:30 am....off again, call the fire chief and he comes back out with his detector....through the roof again.....Furnace guy is coming back....we are out of the house....Could possibly be a back up in the chimney where the furnace is vented.

LONG STORY SHORT......GET A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR.....IF IT GOES OFF, CALL 911 AND GET OUT OF THE HOUSE....CO2 IS ODORLESS, COLORLESS, TASTLESS.  THE FIRE CHIEF TOLD US WITHOUT ONE, WE WOULD HAVE FALLEN ASLEEP AND NEVER WOKEN UP.

Please tell everyone you know to get a Carbon Monoxide Detector.

That is a scary story, Diane. I'm embarassed to say that I don't have one. It's been on my list, but hasn't been a priority. Now I will certainly put it to the top of the list!

I know of a woman in our town who died from CO (it's NOT CO2- that's carbon DIoxide). The investigator said she had gotten a ceiling fan installed by a handyman wh didn't do it right. They think a short circuit in the fan wiring caused a slow, smoldering fire- one morning she didn't ake up. Scary stuff.

Diane, Thanks for the reminder to encourage everyone to get a carbon monoxide detector.  We finally got one and am really thankful we did after reading your story.

Hi Diane.  Glad to hear everyone is safe.  I am curious to know the cause for the excessive CO.  I am sure you are as well.  This time of year, snow and ice can alter the ventilation patterns of the house.  Did you do any recent "energy saving" improvements to the house?   Closing up some of the drafty windows and doors may induce backdrafting in a chimney.
