I recently saw the movie Seven Pounds. In this movie one of the main characters, an obviously good person, said that she had not lived a remarkable life. Since seeing this movie, I have reflected again and again on her comment and have asked myself: What IS a remarkable life?
I imagine that everyone has a different vision of what makes remarkable people. To some a remarkable person is someone who has achieved great things, maybe invented something amazing, to others it may be people who have had influence for good on the world like Mother Teresa. Being remarkable is not necessarily just measured by one's achievements, it is also the meriad of small things done daily throughout a life in the way that someone treats and serves others. Here is my list of the things that I believe make a remarkable life:
- Service to others
- Integrity at all times
- Generosity - they are generous in sharing their means and time and talents
- They are generous with their love and are loved in return
- They show kindness and respect shown to all
- Gratitude – which they both feel in their hearts and express
- Commitments are kept – even the little ones
- They truly listen to others
- They bear adversity with patience and dignity
A life lived by principles such as these is a remarkable life. This is a question for all of us: What do I need to do to live a remarkable life? I've known people who seem to be so good to their friends and family, but when it comes to business - it's all about the money. As real estate professionals lets all try improve in the ways that we treat others - everyone we come in contact with. We can make the world a better place.
"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." –Stephen Grellet (1773-1855)
