I was on a roll with my blogs and my internet marketing. Now I have to go through this again. My 2nd laptop just died and I only had it for 18 months.

The message on my screen stated "....System32\en-US is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." I ran the Chkdsk utility and it went to a certain point and just froze.

Last year, my desktop hard drive crashed. After paying $1,800, a data recovery service was able to get me back up to speed .  The year before that, my first laptop introduced me to a term called "The Blue Screen of Death."

I was in the process of reorganizing all my files, so I could do an entire system backup this weekend while the Arizona Cardinals beat up on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL Superbowl, my Gateway Tablet Laptop Model #: TA6 (it's the one where you can write on) decides that it was time to die.

Well, I don't want to shell out more money for laptops. I want to find a way were I can run my entire business in a 90% virtually environment without any hardware on my end. Any suggestions?

Moving Forward,

Kendall E. Matthews

8 Comments on What I Hate About Being A Laptop User--Corrupt & Unreadable!!

I have a friend who just finished his master in computer something or other. He flat out told me, if a laptop goes bad, your better off trashing it and getting another. Everything is so tiny in them its really hard to repair.

You'd think for as much as they cost, they'd be a bit more dependable.

Why not just store your important files online using dropbox.com or something like that.

Kendall, ever since I convert to Thinkpad and Mac laptops, I have never had any problem. I guess it just pays to buy the best brand.

Your situation scares me to death! I also us a laptop and have nightmares about it crashing. I  backup important files and family pictures on a portable usb hard drive.

Some More Tips

  1. Back-Up often,
  2. Buy a laptop cooler, a two fan system that sets under the laptop and cools it, mine is a Byteck, $12 at Fry's Electronics.
  3. Can of Spray Air, Air Duster, blow off the key board and any open space; wipe the rest with Windex wipes.
  4. Keep all software disks that came with the Laptop and be able to find them.

Kendall,

I have had this happen to me way too many times. I implemented a few backup systems. I am going to write a post about them soon.

Thanks everyone for your comments, so far.

I have two external portable hardrives with a total of 750GB.  I'm good on my backup systems. However, I'm horrible in not having to buy new hardrives and laptops these past 3 years.

The Gateway Tablet PC was not an inexpensive toy. I loved being able to write my contract directly on the screen.  However, if I have to buy a new laptop, I'm going to look hard at Apple.  Do they have a good tablet version?

An apple has the same exact hardware as any other computer and isnt going to help you anymore.
