What Does a Trillion Dollars Look Like?

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050
We hear so much razzmatazz from the talking heads about this economic stimulus package that is surely going to surpass a Trillion dollars. This word is being tossed around like it were chump change or something. Folks, we are talking trillion with a capital "T". If you are like me, I needed some kind of visual so that I could wrap my puny mind about what these lawbreakers are talking about strapping us with.

1) - Imagine, if yoMoney, Money, Moneyu can, having a $1,000.00 bill. A stack 4" high will equal a million or so. Now a Trillion $$$'s would be a stack 63 miles long - or about the length of the drive to Grandma's house.

2) - Since most of us will not see a $1,000.00 bill in our lifetime, lets put it in a little more laymen's terms - say $20.00 bills. That same trillion changed out would stretch for over 3100 miles or about the one-and-a-half times the length of the US.

This stimulus package will spend about $275,000 to create a $42,000 job (average US household income).

So instead of giving the money to big business and to even bigger government who will find ways to fritter the money on more pork and other wasteful crap, why not divvy the money out equally to every household and let us spend the money on what we want. We can then use that money to stimulate this US economy. Only makes sense to me. What do you think?

Wishing all my fellow drips and tweeps a great day... 8-)

Gail, I know that I have a wierd form of logic, most home inspectors do. But I do agree with you whole heartedly that there is enough pork in the stimuls bill to feed the nation for a good long time on a diet of - well, whatever flows out of DC. Thankfully, we do get a chance to change the faces on the Hill every few years. If deficit spending would cure our ills, we would already be out of this recession. - Look what happened in Japan with all thier "Stimulus" spending - it doesn't work...

I get it now.

If the party in power SAYS that it is a stimulus bill and not pork, it's stimulus.

If the party in power SAYS that a Thousand Billion Dollars passed out to cronies is stimulous, it's stimulous.

If the party in power SAYS that this will help the economy, giving a Thousald Billion Dollars to cronies will help the economy.

After all, they wouldn't lie to us would they??????????????????????????????

Michael - and don't forget the interest, it is borrowed money. And strangely enough, on of the reasons for not doling out money to the taxpayers, we would only use it to get out of debt, and that wouldn't stimulate the economy. But birth control will.

Mike, But isn't that what the banks and other business are doing? I think that most folks would spend the dough on a vacation, TV or something else...

Michael - If we would tell congress to go home for about 10 years this would all be straighten out. In fact, if we would undo the last 20 years of what congress has done, and start over, we wouldn't have this problem.

Michael,

I thought the stimulus package was intended to help those folks in trouble as a result of the Put everyone in a home of their own" fiasco. Silly me! Just another avenue for uncontrolled government spending. God help us!

Michael, the stats are astounding, but why not to your question? Why not give the taxpayers stimulus money (with restrictions) to stimulate the economy? Why not let us decide where and how the money is spent? This should get some momentum....it would unfreeze the credit markets by paying down debt.

I am going ful steam ahead with this, maybe, just maybe you have started something.

That visual is astounding.  If I took up all my twenties in my house and laid them side by side I might have enough to line the bottom of a cake pan!
