Katrina Cottages - An Interesting Housing Option

Katrina CottageThe Katrina Cottage is certainly an interesting option for those wanting to stay in a hurricane-devastated area while their house is being rebuilt.  It's also a viable option for anyone who wants to enjoy land they've purchased and intend to eventually build their custom home on, but are not ready to build the full-size version yet. The cottage may even be a good option for affordable housing - a hot topic these days!

If you click on the "Using the Cottage" link, it's interesting to see how it can provide people with three options of where to place it on the lot so as to eventually incorporate the cottage into the final plans for the lot. If you click on the "Plan Options" link and then on each of the artist's renderings, you'll see that they offer five different floorplans ranging in size from 308 to 936 sq. ft., depending on your needs. There's even a two-story version.  Katrina Cottages are designed to be reasonably priced and withstand heavy rains and winds up to 140 MPH and, in my opinion, are a better alternative to FEMA trailers.

Lowe's Home Improvement stores has signed on to be the exclusive retailer of housing plans and associated building materials needed to construct Katrina Cottages.

Overall, I'd give the Katrina Cottage a definite "thumbs up!"

I first saw these about 9 months ago.  The website seems more complete now.  How are they financing these homes?  Is there subsidy money available?  Can you imagine if the homes become permanent?  They would be the new wave of army barracks that some towns have.

We would call these camps. This is a great improvement over the fema trailer. Camps were places on the water where locals loved to go during the summers to live. I will have to blog on camps.

Katrina Cottages are great - but for a truly "green" building process you have got to check out Shipping Container Housing. Now that is cheap recycling!!

Carl, now that's what I call thinking "outside the box" (no pun intended)!!!  If anyone else has a chance to view the short clip, please do.  This one falls under the "I never would've thought..." category.

I just found an interesting article about the Katrina Cottage that mentions one version of the cottage which...

"takes the idea of storm survivability to the next level. Even if it's completely submerged in a flood, you simply remove any furnishings that have absorbed water, hose down the interior, and replace the electrical switches.
[...]
The panelized construction system enabled the cottage to be built in seven days (or even fewer, eventually) for about $70,000."

Amazingly, this is more-or-less what the cost of a FEMA trailer is.

Great post.  It just goes to show you that good ole American ingenuity will beat a government agency (FEMA) anytime.
