DRESS for SUCCESS! Clothes don't make a person but they make a first IMPRESSION!

I have the privilege of leading the FIABCI-USA Luxury Properties Group and I
have had all the Luxury Property Specialists and Brokers to call in each month
and we discuss and share what is working in their own market.

This weeks call was very interactive and interesting and we talked about many
topics, technology tips and then touched on DRESS for SUCCESS! It is my opinion
that if you are going to be a professional you should dress like one.  Who wants
to hire a broker that picks them with a dirty car, wrinkled clothes, jeans or sandals?
We all love to dress casual but there is a time and place for everything.  Would you
hire an attorney to represent you in an important case that arrived in flip flops,
Hawaii shirt, cut offs?   Of course you wouldn't!  They should DRESS for SUCCESS

I saw the news talking about President Obama changing the dress code in the
White House.  Personally I have always thought of Mr. Obama as a sharp dresser
and I didn't think that he looked bad in his white shirt and a tie, however, when
they showed President Bush and his regard for the oval office being the only
place where everyone wears a jacket, it looked Presidential.  Queen Elizabeth
has always been very particular about how she presents herself and dresses.

They say that "Clothes don't make a person" but I say that they make a first
impression and sometimes you don't get a second chance at another impression.
Make the first one COUNT!  DRESS for SUCCESS!

Hi Dagmar,

I agree with you 100%.  Most people make a decision about the house they are going to buy in what, 15 seconds.  Yikes we better make an impression as quick as that, or they will be down the road. If we don't look professional what makes a new client think we will be professional.  We can wow them with our brains and professionalism later.

You are talking to me...I dress pretty casual and have not had any problems, but have been rethinking myself for the past month or so.  Guess it is time to go shopping.  There are few things I find less enjoyable. I don't like to shop.

The best advice I have heard it this: dress about the way most of your customers/clients do, or possibly a little better. My area is very casual, and most agents dress casually. A few really dress "up". Will that impress some people? Maybe. But it will also turn off some.

Evelyn, you need to come to Atlanta and we need to go shopping together.  I love to
shop.  What I find is really fun is when I travel with my FIABCI friends to different
real estate conventions and events we all go shopping together.  Sometimes that can
be so much fun because we get to model for each other and get opinions of our friends.
My friend Kathryn from Marco Island and I both love Kasper suits and Chico's.  We call
each other when we see there is a new style we both like.  It's really fun.  Come and you
can go shopping with us.  You're always invited.  Thanks, Dagmar

Leslie, I know that some of my colleagues from around the country made the same
comment you have that their area is casual.  There is nothing wrong with casual, I just
think that coming in with flip flops or wrinkled clothes doesn't give us as Realtors a
very professional look.  I think there are many casual suits and outfits that look very
nice.  But I don't like to push my ideas onto others - it's up to each individual and their
clientele.  Thank you so much for your comments.  Dagmar
