We have noticed an increase of graffiti here in Cedar City. Not that there is a lot, but when you go from almost none any graffiti seems like a lot. I will be honest, although some of the taggers are extremely talented artists, I still just don't understand why they do it. It isn't their property, so why deface it? I feel much the same way about vandalism in general. More often than not, the person that owns the property that is defaced or destroyed isn't even someone that the tagger or vandal is after.
What did the side of the building or window ever do to them? More importantly, why should the property owner have to spend the money to clean up someone else's mess? I know that to many people, this really isn't anything bad. Those same people would yell and throw a fit if someone took something worth several hundred dollars from them. They would want the thief punished and restitution for the value of the stolen items. They don't seem to get that the owners of properties that have been tagged or vandalized often pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year to clean up the mess not of their doing.
I know that in some cultures they think of it as marking their territory, defining boundries that shouldn't be crossed if you're the wrong race or wear the wrong color of clothing. Isn't it time that we put this archaic thinking aside? I really had hoped that this past election was proof that this stupidity was behind us; that we finally got that all men are created equal!, and having realized that, know for sure that the origin of one's family had nothing to do with the capabilities, talents and content of their souls.
Or is this something much more simple, much baser of emotions that fuel this behavior. Is it jealousy, greed, pettiness or the desire to bully that causes this type of behavior? Is it a sense of entitlement, that someone owes you something, or that as long as it doesn't effect you it is alright to destroy and ruin other people's belongings? I don't know, but it is senseless wanton destruction. It serves no actual value to anyone, in fact, it drives values down, makes neighborhoods look blighted and unattractive. Makes cities seem seedy and dirty, and in fact takes a little of our soul with each spray painted line or figure.
In some cases these are talented artists, isn't it time to put those talents into something productive and beautiful? Isn't it time to teach each other that we are all in this together, we only have one Earth and we all have to share it, so we may as well get along. Isn't it time to realize that before we are entitled to any respect, we must first show respect to others? I am sorry if this seems like a rant, I don't know what set it off, maybe it was the sheer nonsense of the actions, or the absolute waste of resources needed to clean up messes left by selfish people.
I do believe it is time that we clean up ourselves and eliminate the feelings that cause us to treat others with such a blantant lack of respect. It is time to get to know our neighbors and bring this country back to the greatness that it once enjoyed. It is also time to understand and realize that the promise of greatness is for everyone in this country, regardless of where their ancestors may have been born. This didn't have a lot to do about real estate, other than to drive down property values. I also believe with all my heart that in order to have a healthy self respect, you have to respect others. I hope that you make it a great week!
