Aloha AR Shutterbugs:

I was at a 1st birthday party for a friend of ours' daughter yesterday and took some photographs (we tend to do this as photographers) of my son, Ethan and came across this in post-production.  I thought it would be a nice, simple example on how cropping (trimming) your photographs can make them a little more dramatic.

Here was the original shot, nothing spectacular, just him behind a leather chair with another party guest (rather, just a part of them) in the background.

Ethan Original

Kind of an easy fix to start out, just "narrow" the picture to exclude the distracting element and voile', not a bad little upper body portrait.

Ethan 1st Crop

But this is where the fun starts.

By zooming in on the photograph, you can start looking at some "focus" elements and get some really cool pictures from some "eh" pictures. I zoomed in and scrolled around until I came to this, a wonderful portrait of Ethan.

Ethan Final

After I saw what I wanted, I just went back, cropped the image again, then saved the file as "saved as" (so you don't lose the original image) then labeled the file "Ethan Final Portrait.

So when you have the time, you may want to go back to some of those pics you have filed away on your hard drive and see if you can bring new life into them, this includes shots of homes you have listed.  Have fun!

Ethan is so adorable! Ask your wife where she purchased that sweater, I want one for my son Caleb, if she remembers.

Hey Benita:

Thanks for the compliments, I have to agree, he's pretty darn cute, especially with his big blue eyes.  To answer your question, I believe the store is Janie and Jack.

Could this guy be any cuter? Good example of what cropping can do. I kinda like the middle one best.

Andrew--I am a BIG fan of cropping...as long as the dpi is high, it turns out really nice!  A good camera is also a big asset as well!  Thanks for sharing your professional eye.  Regards-Kathleen

That's great! I love going through my photos and cropping them. It's so satisfying to turn an okay (or even downright uninspiring) shot into a really good one.

He's precious, Andrew.  What a beautiful child.  I love the second photo as the black background of the leather chair just makes him pop off the page.

Thanks for sharing.

You know, I learned this in scrapbooking.... years ago I lived to scrapbook and I learnd two very important things about cropping....

1) Sometimes editing out everything will give you a much more dramatic photo....

2) Sometimes leaving the background is will help make the photo more interesting (think of the car your dad drove when he was a young man.... you wouldn't want to edit it out of the photo)

Paying attention to what your focus is, in this case your son, was really all that mattered in the photo.  Had he been standing in front of a mountain with a sleigh next to him, it would have been different....

Your son is so cute!  Cropping is standard procedure for me.  My pet peeve is pictures with distracting elements in them.  It is such a simple thing to do, there is no excuse.  Many times I will take it one step further and "clone" unwanted items out.  I tend to get carried away!

Andrew - I have two rules for photography.  First if you want a couple of good images, take lots of bad ones (hey! This is digital imaging - "film" is free).  And second - always look for post processing opportunities.

You don't always see the best images hidden within the frame until you blow up the image on the monitor.  I see things on the computer that I may have missed on site (too busy taking pictures of something else).  Crop here, adjust lighting there - there may be a great shot of something that was not the original target.

In this case, there was a marvelous portrait of Ethan lurking in that picture of the couch.  (very cute, by the way)

What a great shot.  I don't think I would have thought to crop it so close.  Looks fantastic.

I love that my new laptop came with that feature already on it.  It makes it so much easier to use.

Great shot Andrew.  I agree that in most cases cropping improves the shot.

Forget the cropping...the child is the star of your show!  What an adorable red head.  I have 2 red heads of my own....they are a lot bigger now!  Enjoy this precious child.
