Mt. Redoubt Update - Eruption Warnings January 2009

News from the Alaska Volcano Observatory this morning suggest we're getting closer to a Mt. Redoubt eruption Located approximately 95 miles southwest of Anchorage, Mt. Redoubt has been showing increased seismec activity for more than  a week.

While an eruption hasn't ocurred yet, smoke plumes have been spotted on a number of ocassions and hole in the glacier has greatly enlarged since the last AVO overflight, suggesting the likelyhood of an eruption remains very high.

According to the latest measurements, the opening in the glacier is now the size of two football fields wide and increasing.  The photo to the left is courtest of Chris Waythomas of the Alaska Volcano Observatory and the US Geological Service. Please take precautions for a possible eruption!

Jesse, I told my wife this story yesterday and she is highly interested in your updates so thanks for the followup post. Still haven't heard a peep on this story in our area. I guess when it blows it will be all over the news. You and Kathy stay safe!!

Thanks for the update Jesse. I would rather deal with our earthquakes than a volcano.

Be safe.

Jesse, we still lived in the mid-west when St. Helen's erupted, but we got a little bit of that ash all the way in Cincinnati (or so they told us). Do you have any idea how Redoubt would compare to St. Helens?

95 miles in volcano terms is just a stone's throw away from you - correct?  Sounds to me like you guys need to seek shelter at a distance of perhaps 950 miles away!  Seriously, what will you do in the event of an eruption the size of Mt. St. Helens?

I've been watching news of this for a few days. My husband & I, along with friends from San Deigo, are going on an Alaskan cruise in May, so we watch the news about Alaska closely!

I hear they're telling everyone to get goggles and face masks. Will those really help?

Yikes Jesse!!! How far is this from you? Has there been any modern eruptions of this volcano? The closest I have ever come to a volcano erupting was when I told TLW her ass was getting fat!!!

I read in todays paper here that your Governor is missing as well, maybe that is where she is. People will not let that lady alone will they.

How far away are you...Even a couple of hunderd miles could be an issue with the ash etc.

Jesse,

Does this eruption depend on whether or not the Polar Bear sees his shadow on Monday...??? Thanks,   Fran

JESSE, My husband last summer helped a friend who is building a home not very far from there.  They of course did a couple of days of fishing also.  He is supposed to go back to help again this coming July.  It is a guy that he works with here but he plans on retiring there.  I hope there is a there for him to retire to.  Keep us posted.

Jesse - Aren't you glad you are so far away from Anchorage?  Me too.  LOL my mom called me the other day moments after it blew.  Even though she used to live here in Juneau and knows how far away Anchorage is, you'd have thought I should have heard it from here!
