I wasn’t quick enough for my clients, but I’m starting to think that was a good thing

Yesterday I got an e-mail from one of my clients wanting to see a home. Unfortunately, I had to be part of my own personal cops show outside my parents' house. Then I had a scheduled open house on the other side of town. There was just no way I was going to be able to fit this client in today.

That is when I get the call from them telling me that they had sent me an e-mail telling me they wanted to know more about this house and if I could show it to them today. (To be honest, I hadn't even received the e-mail yet.)

But, they said, we couldn't wait for you Todd, so we just drove over there and you no longer have to find out more about the home and we no longer want to see it. HUH? What? I had to ask what it was that they didn't like as I knew that actually this was a pretty nice neighborhood.

They said "We liked the area, but the police tape across the front door concerned us too much to even want to look at the house anymore." Well, I guess I could certainly understand not wanting to live in a house that was the subject of a police investigation, but in a sick, sick way, I still want to know what happened at the house that deserved the door to be kicked in during the listing period.

Also, don't you think the listing agent would have taken the home off the market after something like this? I know I would have!

SOunds like the listing agent may not have been even been by the listing in a while huh?  It amazes me how many times I have been to vacant homes and the listing agent had no idea that something was amiss - like a roof leak that ruined the ceiling and things like what you described.  sad....

Police tape on the front door is definitely a red flag! - I had some similar things happen to me - thank God not when I was with clients, but when I was checking out some potential houses I wanted to show....

Thank goodness they did not call the listing agent, look inside and then LOVE it- followed by writing an offer with that agent.

Oh my, that is crazy.  I wonder if the listing agent will update the MLS to say, "listing not available for showings until 2 years from now because it is part of a police investigation". I feel sorry for them.

Perhaps the listing agent didn't know the door had been kicked in and had crime tape up?  But, you'd think they would want to know.  Call them and say "hey did you know...".  Goodwill goes a long way in this business.

Maybe the tape was from the night before?  Could have just happened.  Don't you love how a buyer wants info NOW and doesn't wait for you.... I'm not gonna go there......

I would think the listing agents lock box would be obsolete with the police door approach.

You have to love those buyers wanting us to jump all the time. Some it is important to do, but some I have learned a phone call was in order before anything.

I sold a house last year that still had remnants of police tape on it.  I didn't see it at first, until the actual buyer told me about it.  I learned to take a second look at everything now.
