donors choose

This weekend I saw a commercial on television for Donors Choose, a charitable organization founded by a Social Studies teacher from the Bronx.   I was intrigued that he was able to put this together to help teachers and students get the supplies that they need, not only for projects, but books and learning materials.

I have been looking to donate to a charity that means something to me and have been inspired by Charlene Storozuk's post here, to search for one that I make a connection with.  I am most interested in donating to charities that deal with children.  I believe I have found it with Donors Choose http://www.donorschoose.org.

Teachers will post what materials they need and the amount.  I have found that many of these amounts range from $200.00 and up, with the odd $80.00 donation coming up.  Sometimes they have a picture of the kids or classroom.  You choose which project you want to donate to and in which state.  I like this because I can donate to schools close to home.  Your donation is tax deductible.

Please visit the website http://www.donorschoose.org to learn more about donating, look over the donation requests and read more about this organization.

Kathy - I certainly will. I love to causes that help children.  They are our future and we need to invest in them.

Tanya ~ I made my donation today and I can't tell you how good I feel!  What I didn't mention is that you get a thank you note from the teacher and then after the class receives the project materials, you get a contact from them too!  I love that you know where your money is going, what it is being used for and that it is going to real people - not administrative salaries.

Kathy, I have to bookmark this and show it to my daughter who just started teaching.  Her school doesn't provide much for the children and she often buys the supplies to bring in to school.  Thank you for the information.

Carole ~ This would probably be good for her then!  They seem to be very thorough checking these requests out and they verify again to make sure the teacher still needs/wants the materials.  I received a lovely thank you note from the teacher through the site this evening.

Laura ~ Wonderful!

Sheldon ~ Yes, it ranges from kindergarten up through the years, and there are requests for special needs classes as well.  One class just wanted pens  for the students because they are at an age now where they will switch from pencils to pens.  Something so simple, yet it will make their day.

Melissa ~ It's great to be able to help out, and you know where your money is going.  I also found that if a donation seems too high for an individual's budget, you can donate a portion to the amount needed.

That is SO awesome Kathy!  What a great organization to support.  That is really neat that you'll get contact directly from the teacher and kids as well.  Thanks for the mention, I'm so pleased that I inspired you.  I'm sure it will make you feel as wonderful as I did when I made my donation :-)

Charlene ~ I thought the one you chose was pretty neat too, but they are only in Canada. This one works just as well for me though, and I like that I'm able to see what it is going toward.
