One of the first things after closing I always strongly suggest to my clients is to change the locks at their new home.

It doesn't matter who sold you the home. You just never know who might have been given a key over the years. A contractor who then gave it to some employees? A crazy cousin? You just never know.

Apparently calling just any locksmith could be a hassle and costly.

Your best bet is to find a locksmith who is a member of the Massachusetts Locksmiths Association.

I'm told that it is not that hard to do it yourself, but I'm not very handy, so I'll be calling the locksmith.

I'd love to hear about any safety tips other REALTORS provide their customers.

Richard, I always suggest that my buyers consider changing the locks.  You never know.

Richard (& Miriam) - Excellent Points! The locks I too tell my clients, never thought about the toilet seats! Often, I provide my Buyer Clients with a Gift Card to Lowe's or Home Depot that they could use to replace the locks. If you use Lowe's Realtor Rewards you can buy the gift card at a discount! Just an idea.

I just recently lost a key from a current listing. They had 6 keys with the same key to all. I called in Lawrence Lock and Key and changed all 6 locks for $10.00 each and a service call for $60.00.Total of $120.00. You don't have to change the locks and bolts they just change the internal lock code and give you new keys.
