The Bay Village Dwyer Memorial Senior Center warms participants in Soup-Cook Off
On January 28th, a day that started out at around 10 degrees below freezing, many West-siders were in the mood for a steaming cup soup--or ten. Senior health-care providers vied for diners' votes at the Dwyer Memorial Senior Center's first soup-cook off in Bay Village this month. "Wherever I end up, at least I know I'll be well fed," Bay Village Clerk of Council Joan Kemper, said.
The packed house benefited from chefs' competitive attitudes and was served ten different kinds of soup as well as trimmings to round out the feast. Executive Chefs like Jim Smith from Avon Lake's Town Center Community Campus went above and beyond to win votes. Smith did so by providing baguettes with homemade garlic butter to accompany Italian Wedding Soup, his tried and true crowd-pleaser.
"I'm always competitive," Smith said. "I consider myself one of the better chefs in the retirement home community." The event was a win-win-win situation: senior health care providers had the opportunity for unique and personal advertising, the Dwyer Senior Center was able to raise more money than expected, and everyone who showed up was warmed up and well-fed for the price of a small donation.
