The luck of the Irish – Well I guess I have a problem or two

Photo courtesy of chidseyAh, the luck of the Irish. A wonderful little statement, but I seem to have two problems with the statement and my own life. The 1st it seems that I am not Irish, and the 2nd is that I believe luck has nothing to do with it!

You own your own business. That is what real estate is all about, right? So why count on something such as luck to get you to the point you consider yourself successful? Work hard, have a good business plan, and have the capital to at least get you started.

So many people get in to real estate with stars in their eyes, knowing they will become rich. But, it seems in real estate school they forget to tell you about the part that this business is expensive even with all the free marketing tools out there.

I've seen many agents forget one or two of the steps to become successful and they eat though a life savings because of the dream that real estate promised them. I've been working since I was age 11 and I can tell you, from the people that I met, the ones that succeed in what ever they do are the ones that plan and work hard. (But, in this business, you do need capital.)

So, instead of complaining about how bad business is, go and do some work. Go out and find new clients, because they certainly aren't finding you!

Todd,

Truer words have never been spoken about real estate or any venture you go into.

You said it so well, savings are good, but hard work and prospecting go much farther to a successful real estate career. It is a career and not a job!

This isn't active rain advice...it's parenting 101.  Too bad that people need to hear this stuff, but you're right on.

So true, Todd!  I have talked to new agents who have unrealistic ideas about their income the first year in the business, to whom all I say is "work hard and you might achieve that goal."  Far more frequently I talk to seasoned agents who continually cry the blues about this market.  I have little sympathy!  Work your business, change your attitude.  Otherwise, you may as well get out...

I'm a firm believer that you make your own luck. People whom others call "lucky" are usually positive thinkers and self motivated.
