The groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter but I'm looking forward to an early spring! If you've got cabin fever, consider a day trip to Natural Bridge in nearby Rockbridge County. Located about an hour's drive from the city of Lynchburg,  Natural Bridge is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States. Natural Bridge is a geological formation, 215 feet high and 90 feet across.  U.S.Highway 11 runs over the top of the bridge.

Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County, VA

Natural Bridge:

  • Once considered one of the "Seven Natural Wonders of the World"
  • A designated National Historic Landmark
  • A Virginia Historic Landmark
  • Listed in the National Register of historic places

Europeans have been visiting the site since the 18th century. It is believed that George Washington surveyed the area and at one time. Thomas Jefferson, purchased 157 acres including Natural Bridge, from King George III for 20 shillings. The property is now  privately owned. A visit to Natural Bridge makes a great day trip for school groups, don't forget to bring your walking shoes. You'll enjoy the walk past the falls on the way to the bridge, it's beautiful.

Pack a lunch and plan to spend the day at Natural Bridge; there are other attractions to check out including Caverns, Wax, Toy and Monster Museums and you have to check out Foamhenge!

Or, spend the weekend at The Natural Bridge Hotel, they have a Valentine's Day Special posted on their website. DIRECTIONS, for more info on seasonal hours and admission prices, contact:

The caverns are really cool too - there's plenty to do for a day or a weekend!  Cavern lovers can even visit three or four excellent tours in the general area, each with a slightly different feel and layout.  Lots of fun!

WOW! This is amazing! I don't know if I'd feel safe driving on US 11 over it, tho. I am curious, what's in the monster museum?

Hi Penny, we've been taking our girls to the caverns since they were babies. There is a lot to do, it's a fun trip.

Hi Kim, I probably have been over the top, but it's been a while. I haven't been to the monster museum. If you walk to the Bridge, do the Caverns and the Wax Museum, that's a full day. I should go camping for the weekend so we can go back a second day.

Unbelievable. That top photo is spectacular! And why would it be taken off the "7 Wonders of the World" list?

And I think I'll feature this in the Things to Do/Places to Visit group =)

Hi Lisa, Thank You! I'm amazed by the wonders God created, you can't really take the size of the bridge until you notice how small the people under it are! Thank you for the feature!

Oh gosh I used to take school trips to Natural Bridge! I had forgotten! I am in North Carolina now. I can't believe I never took my kids there. Beautiful pictures.

Absolutely breath taking!  I grow up in Grand Coulee Dam which is the 8th Wonder of the World!
& North America's Largest Concrete Structure!
While I enjoyed the lakes and recreation the views are nothing like this.

Hi Marie, I've never been to Grand Coulee Dam, but we've been to Hoover. That was big, I can't imagine how much larger the Grand Coulee is!

Thanks Teri. Arizona is one of my favorite states, you have some beautiful scenery. I've been to the Grand Canyon several times and never tire of sitting near the edge.

Rich, it's about an hour from my home, a really nice day trip, very peaceful

Hi Mike, thanks I love this photo, you can't get the scale of the bridge unless their are people underneath. Just another amazing place to visit in our country.

Hi Marchel, it is beautiful with the waterfalls and the river, a lot for the eyes to take in.

Uh, I hope you're not planning to move too far away? Your mom would have serious withdrawls!

This would be a great place for an AGD outing. Got to check out the wax museum!

I don't recall the caverns when we visited. Are they close by or on site?

Our favorite caverns in VA (so far) is the Luray Caverns (exit 264) off of I81. I highly recommend visiting those.

Hi Bob! There in the immediate area of Natural Bridge. We use to take the girls there for field trips. I like Luray as well, we do have several Caverns in the  vicinity of I81. Next time you come down I'd love to go with y'all. Thanks for stopping by!!!!
