The Outside Blog Minion Report: Shea Stadium / Citi Field

44 years... I am 43 years old and all I can think about is the fact that for my entire life Shea Stadium was a place of fond memories and spectacular moments.

My family loves baseball. Did you know that I was listening to soap operas and ballgames in the womb? Yup. 'Tis true. Oh my word, the interesting things I could tell you about my childhood influences (LMAO - but I digress...). I shall save that for a Susan Mangigian Wordy C moment. After all, I do have a 57 Fact Mega-Meme in the works... among other things. ;-)

I will say that they didn't call me "Mouth" for nothing. Who knew I'd grow up to be a blogger. Betcha' didn't see that one coming, eh? I surely didn't... :-)

Rumor has it I have a gift for gab, but I must confess I was oddly speechless while on my way into the office. I have been driving past Shea Stadium twice a day for over 15 years and I must say it is becoming more difficult for me to do so as construction debris is taken away. Watching them dismantle one of my favorite places caused a mysterious, melancholy lump of emotion to swell up and choke the inside of my throat. I was going to be late for my appointment but I had to get a brief visit in. I did not want them to tear it down completely, although I know this is a necessary part of economic progress and change. It made my heart hurt and I couldn't shake the feeling I was about to cry. I really wanted to cry, but I didn't and that fact distracted me for the rest of the day. It made me wonder what was wrong with me...  I felt like an old friend was dying a slow death... Who knew you could feel that way about a recreational building?

I am going to really miss this place. My 7 and 2.10 year old will never know the thrill of sitting on those orange seats with their best friends, gobbling down expensive hot dogs while enjoying the atmosphere of sharing a landmark that dates back to the World's Fair. There is always the hint of the intangible, a secret thrill from watching one of America's favorite past-times take place on historical grounds. I was barely 4 when the Amazing Mets won the World Series Championship in 1969. All of that hollering and screaming while jumping up and down made quite an impression on me.

I am a very visual person (LOL). Artistic or Autistic? Hmm... You decide. I was out of High School when they did it again in 1986. Funny what you remember when your heart decides to mark a significant moment in time.

May God bless the new venture, may it bring new jobs and prosperity to the neighborhoods and I hope that Citi Field is worth the destruction of a treasured landmark. Once upon a time Shea Stadium was the place to be... Now I am looking forward to taking my little minions to Citi Field for their first ball game. :-)

Carolyn, Those are some very poignant memories for you, but I know you will create new ones and this time it will be with your special family!

C, this is beautifully written.  I know exactly how you feel, having seen one of our local stadiums, and soon, another, be taken down in the name of progress.  The new stadiums are something to see though and I hope that you store many more happy memories with your children in them.  One surprise in this post was that you have the gift of gab..!  Really, I hadn't noticed!  Lol!  Love you....

Barb, it is such a strange feeling... To introduce my kids to it while it's being torn down. My mini-Realtors like playing Bob-The-Builder-Realtor-Man-Of-Action, so letting them film the constriction site was a hoot for them. I shall have to take them back again so they can see how much of it is gone.

Susan, my love, I'm glad you know how I feel. It is such a sad moment for me... The new place as so many nice features designed into it but I have to say I wish they could have figured out some way to still have been able to use (or save) the other stadium.

Carolyn,

I have many, many fond memories of Shea Stadium.  I was a season ticket holder for a few years in the 80's until I got married and moved to New Jersey.

On a separate note, I don't do well with change, yet I love everything new and state of the art.

Yes, I'm conflicted.  Nostalgic, yet excited!

C...

I hate it when places that contain so many memories withing their confines are destroyed ... it is like losing a part of yourself. I just hate to see this happen too, and I'm NOT a Mets fan!

Hi Carolyn, great post. One of my best friends and former running partner grew up in New York a die hard Mets fan and has written several times bemoaning the loss of Shea stadium! What a cool Localism post. You know, living in such a great area you have a wealth of good subject matter! have a great weekend!

JoAnna, It's a strange thing, isn't it? I now wish I was a season ticket holder, but I never went that far. I always thought I would have kids first. I guess I was always too busy running around and thought I had more time (LOL).

Thank you, Russell. I'm beginning to think I should write more about the landmarks in the cuty. We have so many cool ones to choose from. :-)

Sad to see a great landmark torn down. Sadder would be to see it empty and deteriorating I guess. At least it's been replaced with a grander stadium, hopefully the new stadium has some of the ambiance.

Mike, the new stadium is amazing but the old stadium had such character. We kept saying they should leave it up because there was more than enough space for them to share the area but the goal was to increase parking and sell of bits and pieces of a historical landmark to make some money.

Think of all the movies and music venues they could have had there. It's a crying shame... I loved Shea...

Truth is, all of the stadiums need to be upgraded for maintenance and security reasons. There are digital cameras everywhere... Counter-terrorism is something we all have to deal with, especially businesses that bring large gatherings of people together.
