Is the water gone once you mop it off the floor and you can't see it anymore? For those of you that answered, "Yes, except for the water in the towels and/or mop.", read on please.

There are many variables that determine the extent of water damage.

  • Source and flow or direction of the water.
  • Structural building materials and flooring.
  • Interior and exterior climates.
  • Length of time of saturation.
  • Contents.
  • Even pets.

While the element of danger is significantly less in most water losses than in a small house fire loss, the benefits of immediate response are very similar.

Let's talk about the a/c unit in the attic. The drain line backs up, there's no shut off switch installed and the drain pan overflows. This water event continues for 6 hours while you're at work. You come home to find water pouring through the hall ceiling onto the saturated carpet and water pooled in the entrance hall and the hall bathroom has its very own little lake.

  • Identify your safety factors
  • Stop the water source
  • If you don't have the right equipment, call someone who does - now. Mold begins to grow in as little as 36 hours.
  • Remove as much water from the floor as possible.
