The citizens of Florida had high expectations for the state legislature concerning both property insurance and property taxes. The voters wanted relief. The voters, when questioning candidates last fall, ignored the campaign objectives and asked specific questions, What are you going to do about property insurance costs in Florida? What are you going to do about property taxes in Florida?
So what resulted?
Property Insurance: Pinellas County and other coastal area homeowners with homes insured for more than $750,000 will need hurricane shutters in order to get insurance from Citizens Property Insurance, beginning July 1, 2008. No more premium increases for Citizens until 2009. Bills have now gone to the governor.
Property Taxes: sorry, no time to work this out. We'll come back in June for a special session - at additional taxpayer cost, of course, to talk more about this.
Too little, too late.
Keep this in mind for the next elections.
Sharon,
Thank you for the update.
I wanted to let you know about the success I had finding Florida homeowners insurance using a website that I read about in the St. Petersburg Times:
www.homeinsurancebuyers.org
Even though everyone keeps telling me that no one is writing new business here, this site has 17 companies still writing new Florida home insurance in Pinellas County.
I find 5 companies I didn't know were writing here, got quotes and saved over $3000.
Thought I would pass it along.
