COYOTE? You thought it was a coyote? What the ##$$%%%$

So I am reading the paper yesterday and I see:  Menomonee Falls man shoots a golden retriever - he said he thought it was a coyote.

I look closer at the article and the person lives on the 4800 block of Dolphin Drive.  NOW this really gets my attention.

This person lives a few hundred yards from ME!!  The police walked threw the wooded area WHERE I WALK MY SIMBA every day to see who shot this poor girl!

A neighbors' Golden Retriever is shot by another neighbor - OH MY GOSH!!!!

The golden is 9 months old.  Poor girl.... must have been quite the frightening experience fo her. SHE IS OK.  He shot her with a rifle, the bullet went through her shoulder.  I saw her on TV later in the evening and she is doing fine.

This makes me wonder.... How in the world do you mistake a Golden for a coyote????

A coyotehas a scruffy looking coat - multi colored.

A Golden - well here.... a bit blond!    Simba Snow

There are several coyotes that run our neighborhood.  I have seen them.  They look like scraggly german shepherds.  A far cry from a retriever.  They keep the rabbit population down.  I find remnants of their kill often.

Do you think a little alcohol was involved?  YEP!!!!

If you are aren't sure of what you see at 4 am, please leave the guns in their appropriate place, a gun safe!!

I am very happy that "Amber" is ok.  I am a bit concerned about walking my dog in the wooded area... even though it's my property!!

There are so many people that just don't know a dog from a BIRD.  We also have a coyote problem, where they are now coming into our yards and grabbing small dogs and cats.

Bill, they have been getting small dogs a cats here for a couple of years.  My husband saw 2 in our backyard in early winter.  They were eyeing up the neighbors cat!  We let them know to watch out!  Our dog was barking like crazy when he was let out in the yard, he has a  meaner bark when he sees something in the yard.  It's usually deer, this time it was 2 coyotes!

Ther are lots of people who do not know much in the way of wildlife, but it seems as if just about anyone should know what a Golden Retriever looks like.

JL - ya think?   If you don't know what you're shooting, maybe... just maybe you shouldn't be shooting!!

I wasn't there so I shouldn't judge. But how the heck would you make that mistake?  We have a few coyotes.  When I walk the dogs in the wee hours their eyes will glow when I shine the flashlight toward them.  Once we get close they just slip into the woods.  Maybe I am lucky they have never bothered us.

April, the world is populated with stupid people.  Look at the number of hunters that shoot each other every year, mistaking a fellow hunter for a deer.  Last time I looked deer didn't wear flash orange.  Glad the dog is going to be OK but geez, what an awful thing for her to go through.  Make sure you wear flash orange when you walk your dogs, maybe make them little vests so they too can be seen.  But as I've said, hunters apparently don't see that color.  Maybe flashing light collars would work.  Who knows what goes through the minds of the trigger happy.

Some people get a gun in their hand and are so excited they'll shoot most anything. These people are not true hunters. A real hunter spends more time tracking their prey and learning the prey's habits than s/he does shooting.

April - How in heck could you ever mistake a Golden for a Coyote? I introduced Saffy, my beautiful aussie girl. I have always been fearful of hunters mistaking her for a coyote. She runs our property which is surrounded by more. All it would take is 1 idiot to think she is their prey - I am glad that the pup is going to be okay. Your Symba look like a honey.

Geeeze...although we haven't had any fatalities, either by coyotes or by drunk hunters, it is always a scare and my dog like yours only goes out of her fenced area, if we are walking her. So glad to hear the golden was O.K.  Was the man arrrested?

Mel - I think there was a little too much booze involved! I think I'll hear more this weekend when more neighbors are around.

We have coyotes in our area too, and a neighbor that likes to take pot shots at anything that moves in the woods.  I have already been less than lady-like with this fool - now he has to make a choice ... whether to continue his exhibition of neanderthal behavior or risk my wrath.  Last I knew ... he's still thinking it over.

Gwenn - Now Saffy could be mistaken, although her coat is way too nice.  But the coloring is on the money.... WHo knows what the "real" story is.  Mistake, really an awful mistake.

Shawn - I'm glad Amber is ok too!  Yes, I believe he was arrested.  I hope he is sorry and will think before taking action in the future.  Good thing he didn't go after my Simba - I'm sure I'd be in jail right now for what I'd do to him.....

Arpil,

I would fear a neighbor who had a gun and could not readily identify a coyote versus a dog of any breed.  That is very scary!

We had a neighbor, last weekend, start shooting in the middle of the night because he thought there were IRAQIES in his yard. Coyotes, Iraqies, I definately think there is some substance abuse going on. That's terrible about the dog.
