I advertise my listings on craiglist since many buyers look around on that site for properties.  Lately,  I have been receiving phone calls from people regarding the ad who think my listing is for rent.  When I clarify that the home is for sale NOT for rent, they tell me they found the rental ad on craiglist.  On two occasions, I have had sellers tell me that someone has knocked on their door inquiring about the rental ad on craigslist.

I have flagged these bogus ads and nothing has been done.  Unfortunately, deleting my ad (the original) has no impact since the damage has already been done by the spammer.  I am reconsidering posting any future listings on craigslist until this recurring problem is resolved.

Has anyone else had problems with spoofing on craigslist?

I read a newspaper (I think) story about this within the last few months.  I think that this Craigs list reposting has been used to fraudulently collect rental deposits.  We haven't had a problem in Cambridge yet that I know of but it does seem to be something to watch out for - probably only a matter of time before it pops up.

I have heard about this. I never thought Craigs list was all that great as a marketing vehicle.

You never know what is happening out in cyberland.  I haven't had this problem but then I always post my listings with a VFlyer which may make it harder for the spammers to recreate.

I wonder what is the motivation behind this spoofing other than deposit collecting. It is also my first time hearing this kind of spoofing.

Oh my, that is not good news.  We update our listings on Craigslist every 40 days.

We have seen the same problem in my office. They take Postlets and edit it as a rental...

Crazy times...

Bill- I have received calls from buyers who found my listing on craigslist but I'm not sure it's worth posting there any longer with all of the spamming.

Cindy- I am going to check out VFlyer.  Do you like it?

Huiting- I'm not sure, if I learn more, I will let you know.

Marchel- Not at all...I hope you don't experience the same problem!

Charles- Postlets?!  I post there as well but haven't had a problem yet.

Patricia;

A colleague of mine experienced the same problem. Your intention not to put up listings on Craigslist is wise.

What I mean is they use Postlets and put them on Craigslist. This has now happened to 3 local agents I know... not great...

No problems as of yet. Craigslist seems to be a viable tool, but I guess not without problems

Patricia, Thanks for the reminder about posting to Craig's list. Maybe you can convert those renters into buyers or at least ask if they know someone else looking to buy or sell.

I had heard of this scam a few months ago. I don't think craigs list is the best marketing model when there are so many other venues available.
