In Maui Hawaii, our jobless rate dropped to 1.5%.  That rate is 1/3 the national average.  The economy is much hotter in Hawaii on average then across the country.  (along with the temperature!) Just about the only people not working these days are those between jobs or who don't want to work. When you pull up the job section in The Maui News it is choked full of jobs. Hawaii's economy is growing so fast that there are more jobs today than there were workers last year.

Karen, glad to hear Maui is doing well. I hope things turn around for our total economy.  SOON.

Even though our jobless rate is unbelievably low, many families are struggling here on Maui.  Our cost of living has sky rocketed.  Alot of people are working 2 jobs (and I mean 2 full time jobs) to pay the bills.  With the Maui Real Estate market having a huge run the last 5 yrs, most local folks have been priced out of the market and can barely afford to live here anymore.  Many are moving to the mainland where there is opportunity to own their own home.

It's always amusing to me when I go to the grocery store and a tourist is in line ahead of me with a full cart.  When they get to the register and the bill is 300.000 they can't believe it.  I have learned to buy on a smaller scale so I don't notice it so much.
