What Makes A House A Home?

What makes a house a home? And how can one feel like a place that you never lived in as home? As a Realtor in the Greater Orlando Area, I constantly hear buyers talking about how this could be the perfect home and the best deal.

But when they talk about it they are talking about the physical structure being the reason it is a perfect home. I believe it goes somewhat deeper.

I know of one such place on Jupiter Island. Read about this home over at Paradise Report!

What a surreal property. This sounds like a, for lack of a better term, Awesome Home!

Jason -- words and photographs don't begin to describe it! And I am lucky enough to visit it regularly!

Colleen, thanks for opening up and sharing an important part of your life. I know Aunt Bea and Uncle Bob must be so proud. Hope you let them read this.

Oh yea, the house sounds terrific, but it is other stuff that impressed me.

I do great with off the wall stuff....this? I in no way can compete with you! I'm not cutting myself down...just being honest .....I have so much to learn before tackling something like this!

Sally -- I have every confidence in you. Me being a judge eliminates my post! There is a lot of opportunity to win here... Sit down and think about what makes your house a home. This is about connecting with someone else.... Trust me you will do very well with this!

Colleen- This is a beautifully written tribute not only to the home (not just the house), but also to your family. That feeling has as much to do with how welcome you truly are as it does with just how you feel. I guess houses and writing DO have something in common after all- the bones have to be good, and the feeling wonderful to stick around. Excellent post, thanks for sharing.

Your post made me want to go there, it almost sounds like a fantasy! It's that shared love feeling that really makes it, but the location helps:)

Fantastic evocation of place, Colleen. The house, the family, the location, the memories - all make it home.

How did you do your photos? What program did you use?

Lovely post - it wrapped itself with a warm feeling - and not because it's in Florida! I could imagine days gone by there with family events and gatherings.

This sounds like a wonderful retreat -- a great place to get away - a great place to be with family. You are so lucky to have had such a great place to go all these years -- it is magical.

This is great Colleen, you are so far out of my league, I know we aren't competing with you, but after reading yours, you have set the standard so high, I wouldn't know where to start. This is of course a great compliment to you!! I have to agree with Bruce, you are such a gifted writer and creative to boot. Great post, I too look forward to future posts in your blog. Wow, what a story...what a home! There's a saying that goes "houses are built with wood & stone, but only Love makes a house a home." This post demonstrates that truth. Thanks for sharing & the pictures.

Colleen... it sounds like you have a great place there...catching sunrises and sunsets. I'll be heading to Key Largo in September.... so hopefully I'll get to see these great mornings and evenings. And I liked how you tied in unconventional love and some magic that this home brings to you and your son... and to anyone else that has been a part of this home.

Colleen great post. Wonderful description. I too have heard people use home often . They really mean house.

Sounds like you have had many wonder moments there. And memories all your life are wrapped up in that home. To me that is really what makes a house a home - memories. Especially ones of childhood. That is really what does it for me. My heart is still at an old ranch house I grew up in - so many special times there. And I long to find a place somewhere just like it where I can call home again.
