Reading bedtime stories to your children is one of the many things that Soldiers miss when they are deployed to Iraq. Now with the help of United Through Reading, a non-profit organization, they can record a DVD of them reading their children's favorite book to be played at home.
The program available worldwide, is coordinated at Camp Victory in Iraq by an Army Chaplain. Soldiers choose a book from a selection of books available at the camp and record themselves reading the book. Once they complete the recording they can send the DVD along with a small stuffed animal home.
The program isn't limited to soldiers with children but also aunts, uncles and grandparents can participate too. Since the program began last summer about 80 Soldiers in Iraq have participated and they are encouraged to come back and record more than one book.
Founded in 1989 United Through Reading's vision statement "is that all children will feel the security of caring family relationships and develop a love of reading through the read aloud experience."
The program also offers a special grandparents program and transition program as well. If you have a family member deployed in Iraq they may want to look into this free opportunity to send a bedtime story home.
