Reading bedtime stories to your children is one of the many things that Soldiers miss when they are deployed to Iraq. Now with the help of United Through Reading, a non-profit organization, they can record a DVD of them reading their children's favorite book to be played at home.
The program available worldwide, is coordinated at Camp Victory in Iraq by an Army Chaplain. Soldiers choose a book from a selection of books available at the camp and record themselves reading the book. Once they complete the recording they can send the DVD along with a small stuffed animal home.
The program isn't limited to soldiers with children but also aunts, uncles and grandparents can participate too. Since the program began last summer about 80 Soldiers in Iraq have participated and they are encouraged to come back and record more than one book.
Founded in 1989 United Through Reading's vision statement "is that all children will feel the security of caring family relationships and develop a love of reading through the read aloud experience."
The program also offers a special grandparents program and transition program as well. If you have a family member deployed in Iraq they may want to look into this free opportunity to send a bedtime story home.

What a terrific idea!
This is such a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Cindy this is awesome stuff! I love our troops..hope you are well...and life is grand!
This is a "great" idea for Granddads (me) that are living far away from the Grandchildren. I'm gonna start today!
Cindy, what a great cause! I'm so glad our soldiers have this opportunity to reach out to their children.
Penny-it is. I send little videos to my granddaughter and now I'm going to send one of me reading one of her favorite books too.
CIndy-anything separated families can do to make the connections is a wonderful idea.
Midori-you rock!
Calvin-I just spent a week with my new grandson and my 2 year old granddaughter. I've done a couple of videos for my granddaughter that she seems to enjoy.
Tony-I know it means a lot to the families left at home to have something to pop into the DVD player. It isn't as good as the real thing but at least it is a connection.
Wow what an incredible idea..especially for the little children who miss their parent(s)... I wish this had been around when my cousin was serving in Iraq, he would have loved to send one home to his 2 year old daughter...
I hope more & more soldiers get to use this Program & send some love back to home to their kids & family... Sometimes you just need their voice to make you at peace for awhile...
