Who really WANTS to Live Green anyway? Read on...
Just the other day I was at our local Realtor Association taking a CE course on Green Housing. This is a subject that I would naturally gravitate toward, regardless of the need for hours. Now, I have always figured that when attending any training event IF I come away with ONE PEARL, it was worth going. And, while this ‘overview' of the subject was very informative, one blessed pearl came to light that I didn't expect.
We had a discussion about the hypothetical ‘needs and wants' as they pertain to housing of the usual generational groups... you know, the Baby boomers, Generation X and Y. This yielded the usual... location, size, efficiency etc. Then, just at the end of our class, the instructor revealed this new dynamic. The light bulb was blinking in my head regarding this sub-group I had never heard of called "Cultural Creatives". These people want the 'real thing' when it comes to Living Green, not all the trendy stuff.
Here are some typical attributes...
1.) Cultural Creatives are not typified by generational grouping.
2.) CC's are a Psychographic group based on values and behavior.
3.) Cultural Creatives are seriously concerned about the health of our planet.
4.) They tend toward holistic approaches, ie. health care, food, sustainability.
5.) These folks would prefer to buy green (not just the shade of) ie. Green homes
6.) There is a general rejection of 'overt' displays of materialism and status.
7.) They express dissatisfaction with large institutions and partisan politics.
8.) CC's are generally committed to spiritual and psychological development.
Do you tend to be an idealist? Are you someone who wants to put your values into action? Do you ever volunteer? Do you have a special appreciation for authenticity and tend toward it yourself? Are you a BIG PICTURE kind of person?
If you feel aligned with many of these attributes, you may just be a 'Cultural Creative' yourself and you're not alone. It is estimated that there are approximately 50 million adults of a like mind. Curiously, I felt like I never fit any of the generational labels nor am I inclined to ‘be' labeled. Yet, to my surprise, in this niche, I fit. What about you?

Steve, very interesting post! When I get some time I am gong to check out the Cultural Creative's website. You're smart to get ahead of the curve in this market with the Green Housing movement. It was just getting into full swing in Colorado when I left. Heading this way!
Hey Janna, Well you know that Idaho might be slow to change it's ways. There is, however, one new development behind the Red Barn, Boscanko and Hubbard (?). They have two built and, it seems to me that they are preselling the rest. See you later. Thanks for coming by.
Thanks Steve ! I've been looking for the right term & Cultural Creatives seems perfect ! It's bigger than just Green & this psycographic group is growing ! I want to help them with their housing needs in Pennsylvania ! Keepin' it Green !
Hi Ed, Just so you know, I didn't think up the name myself. Did you check out the link at the bottom of the page? They explain a lot more on their site. Look at "Am I a Cultural Creative?" Thanks.
Hi Steve ~ when I read your catchy title I knew it was something I wanted to reblog!
You ask, "Do you ever volunteer?" I say, "somedays too many times!" I just can't resist! Thanks for a great blog...now I'm off to find out who my other friends are!!!
Hey Mary, Thanks for coming by. I'd be curious to know the results of your inquiries. I suppose I wouldn't be surprised to hear that your friends might be along the lines of cultural creatives too! Re: Volunteering, yes it is a always a blessing. Time is the challenge. Nevertheless, if we each do what we can, it does make a difference.
Hi Steve, Interesting information about Cultural Creatives. Makes perfect sense to me. Thanks for the great post!
Aloha Steve,
There is another term that is perhaps more familiar to your readers that describes Cultural Creatives and that is Indigenous Cultures. Unfortunately, indigenous cultures have been rejected and left by the way side by the Western Cultural hegemony that exists in the world today. Deemed as primitive and inferior, indigenous cultures lack the glorified technological advancements that have pushed our entire world to the brink of utter destruction. Thanks for the post.
Peace,
Hey Kimo,
I've thought that the term 'cultural creatives' is kind of odd... awkward. I have no issues at all with the word 'indigenous' itself. In my way of thinking we are all indigenous, it's only a matter of how far away we may have strayed. I appreciate your thoughts on the subject. Thanks for reading mine.
Peace,
It's interesting that Paul Ray is known in some circles, in fact for many decades, as a marketing guru, and in others an anthropologist. As he is both, he is potent at defining and targeting his mark. Being the owner of a green company, I look at at alot of marketing data and receive a lot of marketing proposals. Here is a link to an interesting interview that Paul Ray has given to LOHAS - Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability, a marketing group also.

In this interview, Mr. Ray warns that "Cultural Creatives" hate labels more than any other group of Americans, ironic isn't it that so many of them are embracing the one the guru has created.
Michelle, Thank you for the link. The article is interesting... the challenge being 'how do you market to a values based demographic?' I appreciate you coming by.
Steve, here in Nashville, I'm odd because I'm such an avid recycler. I even carry the cr## from the office because no one else will! I've just signed up for a green class at our board and hope to learn something insightful too. Great post.
Hey Steve~Very informative & interesting post! Count me with you as a new member of the CC!

This is very interesting, Steve, and I plan to check out the links. How would one go about marketing to a values-based group?
Steve, I've been in this corner or this niche as you call it for a long time... it seems we are becoming trendy and don't appear so much like oddballs anymore! I'll be reblogging you!
Steve - I've never hear of Cultural Creatives before. I thought of taking the CE class on Green Housing but figured out there is not much demand here because of the prohibitive cause. But now, with other things being taught, I might go for it. Do I volunteer? I say too much. I have to learn how to say No. I do recycle things but I'm not into organic food. Your post is very interesting and I will reblog it.
Rosalinda, I have to admit that the CE class covered a lot of information in a short period of time. Nevertheless, I'm glad for the exposure and I will say that it sparked my desire to get the advanced training for ECObroker. I understand what you mean though about the demand. I think it's a sort of 'Build it and they will come' thing. My neck of the woods is slow to change overall too. Thanks for your comments and for reblogging... Did it work though? I don't see the rain tag.
Silvia, Yes perhaps we won't be the 'odd ducks' any more. Thanks for reblogging.
Heather, I came upon another website link which may also be helpful called the Global Oneness Community This might offer some other insightful detail. 'How to market to a values based group?' is the question of the day. If any one comes up with a good idea on that, please share. Thanks for coming by.
Fern, I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks for your comment.
Ginger, Thanks for your comment... My hunch is that you may have already been inclined toward these ideas. The revealing part about information provided via the cultural creatives website is that we as a group haven't even known how to band together for the common good. Seems that the time is 'at hand'...
Connie, That's funny... hauling of the office recycling... You go girl, no matter what they say. Perhaps someone there will eventually take it seriously. Hope you do take the class.
Thanks to all for your comments and reblogs. You inspire me! The points would be cool, but they're just points. In the end it's about YOU... Peace.
Steve-I am sorry I did not have time to reblog. Thanks for teaching us about a new cohort. I had not heard about Cultural Creatives before. It does make sense and may prove that the education efforts are taking hold and the results may make a significant difference to the future of our world. Imagine! An entire generation green conscious!
Eloise, Your welcome. I am encouraged by the response which tells me that, even in our own niche in the world, 'Green' has a conscious representation and by our influence upon others we can each make a difference. When you add it up, perhaps we can have the impact needed for the betterment of our planet. Thanks for commenting.
