Stories. We all have one.
Some of us have many.
They hook together like an unending game of Barrel of Monkeys Goodrich-Loomis Tree Rootsnever letting us pause long enough to reflect on the pattern, or whether or not there even is a one.

Some of us live in constant chaos.
Such is the nature of life. It's messy. This is the way life unfolds. Our lives unfold in a deep mystery that is often only seen by someone looking on.

The one in the midst of the chaos is too tangled amidst searching branches and stubborn roots to be able to see clearly the way out.
Here steps in the vessel for our stories.

The keeper of the stories of our lives is most often someone close to us. Someone we trust enough to reveal our stories to.
These vessels are extremely important in our lives and should be listened to and loved deeply. They hold up the reflection of our life so that we may view it and see it in it's naked, chaotic glory.

Once we see what the vessel wants us to see, we begin to have choices. Until then we are stuck. We struggle and struggle not knowing which way to turn, making many wrong choices which only increase the chaos and tangle us more deeply.

Each of us longs to be known deeply.
To have someone really 'know' us and understand us and see in us the things we cannot see for ourselves.

With this person or persons, we feel safe and 'right'. All anxiety dissipates when we are around the keepers of our stories and we know we are in the presence of someone uniquely rare and hard to find.
Someone who knows us often better than we know ourselves.

The keepers of our stories know our tender places. They've been there with us down difficult roads on which we've stumbled many times. Each time they were there to extend a strong hand and pull us back up again.
They know our strengths and they see the gifts we were meant to bring to the world.

They know us through and through and love us, unconditionally.Kelowna Sunset

Listen to the keepers of your stories.

They have only your best, unbridled interest at the centre of their warm and loving hearts.

They care about you and want you to see what they see. Gaze deep into the mirror they hold up for you and take in carefully what they show you.

The key to your existence is often held safely by those who know you, listen to your stories and from there light the path you should be following.

Who are the keepers of your stories?

When you find one, hold fast to that person and treasure them for the rest of your days.

My keeper of stories has left me.  Not physically, but emotionally and so I move on.  My whole life has been a series of separations and so I seek the melding with someone who can appreciate and understand.  Thank you.

Hi Suzanne,

I'm sorry to hear this.....so much of our lives is saying goodbye to those who we thought time with would be immeasurable.

Another keeper of your stories will come along....

  1. Sometimes we fill the air with idle chatter while someone we love remains lonely and isolated.  Our stories can be a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences begging to be shared with another human being.  Yet, It is so very difficult to trust these days.  I'm afraid that we fragment or distort our stories to everyone, including ourselves, on occasion.  Perhaps this is for fear of what others will say...or not say.  Being separated or estranged from the keeper of our stories forever is an emptiness that we cannot really share with anyone else.  It is only ours to bear. Let us be sensitive to these separations and losses...let us try to listen and understand. Take care, Suzanne and Jo Anne.

Roseann,

As much as we are the keepers of stories for others, they are the keepers of stories for us...
Difficult to trust, yes, however part of living is taking chances and not closing the heart in bitterness. Educating oneself as to who the false story keepers are, yes.

Life is all about beginnings, and of course, endings. I believe, however, that the true keepers of our stories, go on keeping them for all time.....

Jo, many very key phrases with the keeper of your stories outlook. Many discoveries I have made along the way too. Each of us longs to be known deeply. Not easy to do for many who come into our lives because they are so busy. And seeing things in us we cannot see ourselves is also something we need. Above all the keeper of our stories needs to be tender with our vulnerabilities or they will have lost our trust. One of your best posts Jo.

Gary,

How true, especially the part " Above all the keeper of our stories needs to be tender with our vulnerabilities or they will have lost our trust."

Thank you for your very inspiring and kind comment,

Fran,

Just like snowflakes, each of our stories is unique and beautiful in it's own way....sometimes it takes someone close to us to see the beauty in our stories and in ourselves.

Jo, I agree with Gary, this is one of your most incredible posts....and there have been many.  We have precious few people in life that are truly the keepers of our stories and yes, it is unconditional love.  I treasure the few I really have that care because I know they truly want the best for me--there is never an ulterior motive, just love.

Jo, thanks for letting me tell this and Roseanne, I have kept your response on my computer to read daily, thank you both.  It is hard, but it will get better.  This is so cathartic.  It made these cold days, both temperature and emotionally easier to bear!  - Suzanne

Carole,

They are very rare, indeed....and how fortunate we are when we find one or if we do have one or more in our lives. We are then truly blessed.

We also have the ability to be keepers of stories for others....this is a precious gift we can give them, worth far more than all of the gold in the world.

thanks for your very insightful and kind comment!

Hi Jo,

Sometimes the keeper of our stories is our Significant Other.  That doesn't always last.  Sometimes a close family member appreciates us enough to be the Keeper of our Stories.

Hello Brian!

Nice to see you...

It is sad that sometimes the Keepers of Our Stories are lost to us in time.....I believe the true ones stay forever though.

Hi Jo,

Beautiful....I hope you have found the keeper of your soul. I was lucky the second time around I found him or should I say he found me!! Which ever way it was,  it has been wonderful, he knows my soul better than I do at times I think! He is my rock he puts up with my insecure moments, he picks me up when I am not sure which way to go. He is the keeper of my soul and the love of my life.
