Today, I was delighted to learn that I've been appointed to the Wisconsin REALTORS Association (WRA) Equal Housing Opportunity Committee!

The purpose of our state's EOC is to monitor and evaluate "legislative, legal and regulatory trends with respect to equal opportunity in housing". The EOC works with our WRA Public Policy Committee to help craft or influence pending or proposed legislation dealing with Fair Housing issues.

I feel honored to be invited to join this WRA committee.  I believe that service on association committees and boards is more than an obligation.  It's important for real estate professionals to "walk the talk" when it comes to Fair Housing and ethics issues.  And service on a committee such as this one is, for me, part of that effort.

Eric, good for you!  Equal Housing is so important, and I think a lot of us do stuff unconsciously that may keep it from happening.

Eric, Congratulations on your appointment! I feel that in these challenging times, especially with funding so scarce, it will be more important than ever to monitor and ensure equal opportunity access to housing. Good luck on the committee and please keep us updated on developments! Jolenta

Eric:  What an honor.  How absolutely great it will be to be able to share your excellent and caring ideas about diversity with the others on the WRA committee.  I am proud of you.  Take care... be well... stay warm.

All -- I'm delighted to report that my experience on the WRA Equal Housing Opportunity Committee (EOC) has been a real pleasure.

Among the lastest developments coming out of our committee, we learned on August 14th that our Wisconsin EOC has become the first in the United States to bring forth a proposed amendment to Article Ten of the NAR Code of Ethics.

The proposed draft of this amendment, which I'm proud to say I helped to write, would amend Article Ten of the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics to prohibit discrimination in housing based upon Sexual Orientation.  If the proposal succeeds, it would be, to the best of my knowledge, the first addition of a new protected class to the COE in many years.

You may read more about this very exciting development here:

The people at the National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals (NAGLREP) also hope that this proposed change, if adopted, will result in the same type of change in Federal Fair Housing Law as well.

Eric:  This is great news !  It appears that all your hard work has really produced something monumental.  Congratulations to you, and to all Americans.  Inequality and injustice has no place, or should not have a place, in America.  Take care...
