Tough Love - Stop trying and start doing!

By
Education & Training with Marketing Artfully

I talk to A LOT of real estate professionals who are "working" on something that will change their business. They are "working" on their website before they put it on their business card. They are "working" on their buyer/listing presentation before they will be ready to get more new clients.

I also hear about what they are "trying" to do. They are "trying" to get to that important task but they are busy with their business. They are "trying" to get their database in place or "trying" to do more open houses or "trying" to learn how to be more efficient online.

I had a seminar yesterday with strong, successful real estate professionals which was FABULOUS! I was SO shocked that a couple of them said that they were "trying" to send out two emails to their database per month. What is up with that???? Are their fingers broken? Does their computer shut down for half of the month?

Stop giving yourself permission to "try" and do things. Start picking something (ANYTHING) to do that will grow your business or that you have been trying to accomplish. Figure out a realistic timeline to do it. Then just do it. Tell people that you are going to do it and how long it will take. Make yourself accountable.

I KNOW - there are a million reasons why you can't get the most important thing that will grow your business done. Here are some excuses you can use (see you don't even have to make them up or go to the effort of adding them to the comments - you can just tell yourself that you are failing to accomplish your goals because of #4!!!)

  1. You don't have any time because you have a career and kids
  2. You need to close that next deal before you will have the money
  3. You need to take out buyers this weekend
  4. You have a closing later this week and it will take all 40 hours that you should be working to close the deal
  5. You have 20 voicemail messages to return before you can start
  6. Your assistant quit
  7. You have an inspection/appraisal/listing appointment
I am stepping down off my soapbox now to go do something that I SHOULD be doing that I am NOT doing right now!!! If you catch me making excuses PLEASE - for the good of my business - PLEASE call me on it!

"Do or do not, there is no try - Yoda"  When I heard try in any sentence.  I know they have given themselves permission to fail.

I heard someone say one day "try to sit on a chair...but just TRY...don't sit...just keept "trying". You know what will happen...You'll NEVER sit. It seems to me that everytime I use the word "try" I don't get things done. It's just a bad bad word...Thanks for reminding me Tara!

Take Care & God Bless!

Great post, Tara.  I see this all the time, especially in a slow market.  Realtors make themselves "busy" by preparing for business instead of out there drumming it up.

Tara -

You are so right.  It is so easy to get bogged down with everyday life and not move forward with your business.  I keep a list of things that will move me forward.  Some take only a few minutes, like social networking or making a phone call to follow-up.  Others take more time but can be broken down into smaller steps.  Even if I have only 5 minutes of free time, I can take a quick look at my list and do one thing.  Keep the momentum moving forward.  Like Niki - JUST DO IT!

Tara--Well put!!  I have the career and kids combo, but I have found that I tell myself "There is no later in my world!" I get the job done while I have a chance and then quickly move on to my next bright idea or crisis.

@ Dominic - Great attitude - makes doing the "stuff" easier!

@ Mark - it was amazing hearing that come out the mouth of a superstar agent, imagine what they could do if they actually DID instead of trying...:)

@ Jared - if you are waiting for perfect you wait forever!!! I agree, do it BEFORE you are ready!!!

@ Maria - I am phasing try out of my vocabulary - I KNOW that you make time for things that are important so I should never try to do anything for my family or friends, I should either commit to doing something or tell them that I can't. Try means no.

@ Kris - Isn't it amazing how much you can get done when you are busy but how little gets done when you have all the time in the world? I think inertia sets in!

@ Sue - I LOVE your list! I am going to implement that today...:)

@ Robin - I am SO much better if I get the little things done when I think of them - efficiency experts are cringing all over america!

I still find myself saying "try" sometimes and I know better!  It should be considered a four letter word.  Great motivational post to remind us that we are ultimately responsible for what we do and do not do.
