I've been asked why I would write a book that may take business away from other stagers and my initial reaction was, "how many decorating books are there?" but to tell the truth, my intent from the beginning was to inform.

By nature people like to think they can do it themselves, regardless of what it is.  When it becomes abundantly clear that it isn't as easy as it looks, professionals will be called upon in droves.  Besides, there are millions of people not physically able or don't have the time to do it themselves.

Until such time I think the last thing the staging industry needs is for TV viewers to apply some of what they see on TV and discredit the effectiveness of staging because of their failed attempts.  It's more important to give them the proper tools they need to figure it is best to hire a professional.

I wish you  luck Tina, I've also written a book (Styled by Design- A Guide to the Design Principles of Home Staging), I know how much work is involved. My book is targered more toward Staging professionals. I would be afraid that Home Sellers would not be objective in their own homes, that at least has been my experience. I would be afraid that a little bit of knowledge in this case would be a dangerous thing. Congratulations, keep us posted?

Thanks Allegra, congrats on your book as well!  I know what you mean about homeowners being objective, which is why I included detailed checklists to ensure nothing gets missed.

I don't see it as taking business away.  I see it as education.  I agree that there will still be people who can't do it, even with a book.  Look at all the staging shows on HGTV, they don't take away our business.

Awareness is not competition. Awareness raises the level of interest in our profession!!  Congratulations on writing a book.

Sharon, I agree, you can't teach creativety in a book, a classroom or by watching TV.

Virginia, thanks, I agree with you too.  Why can't we just help one another?

Cathy Lee, thanks and I think awareness is best for everyone as well.

Thanks Tracy and Donna, if we all work together they'll be lot-o-work for us all.

I agree with the book one hundred percent.  As a stager - I know what to do, but still would want a professional to walk through my home - the whole "fresh eyes" idea.  I don't think it will detract at all.  Good luck - I hope it is a success!

Tina - I agree with everyone else - educate home sellers.  It's still not an easy process to do on your own.  I am a home stager and would still want someone to come to my home to analyze my rooms, if it were on the market.  Good luck to you and your book.

Congratulations on your book!  I agree, everyone needs guidance and most will come to realize they need a professional. I have read articles recently where homeowners are growing disatisfied with trying to projects  at home after visiting the how to seminars at places like Home Depot. If it was as easy as watching someone for 10 minutes and doing it yourself there would be no need for any professional for any job.

Hi Tina, congratulations on your book being published and you already know how I feel - I totally support this and you!

Educating the public is key for all home stagers to be recognized and our industry to grow. There are literally thousands of DIY books out there for anything and why not home staging? There will always be the DIYers, those that can't or won't do it themselves and enlist friends or family or HIRE A PROFESSIONAL!  I'm excited to read the newly printed book!

Tina - congrats on having your book published - I think the more exposure, especially good exposure that home staging gets helps all of us in the biz.

My partner and I just learned of another home stager who is making a DVD on "how to stage your home yourself" and we were just floored. I'm all for giving tips and showing people easy things they can do themselves however I shudder contemplating people making personal design choices and then thinking they are staging!

I do hope that this helps raise awareness of our field and encourages sellers to contact professionals to get their homes staged. However it may spark a new HGTV show with stagers going in to fix DIY staging disasters!

That's too funny Heather, I was thinking that very thing the other day.  A show where the homeowner staged their home but the house didn't sell.  Then a professional stages it and demonstrates what creative talent can really do.
