One of my favorite areas in all of New York City, Union Square earned it's name by its central location in Manhattan. Union Square spans from 17th Street on the north, 14th Street to the South, Union Square East and Union Square West. Union Square is such a popular area because it is a convergence of four of the more popular areas in all of downtown Manhattan. Gramercy neighborhood to the East, Greenwich Village to the South, Chelsea to the west, and the Flatiron District to the North.
Union Square has that combination of factors that set it apart from other areas. Being the convergence of the aforementioned neighborhoods automatically make it a central location. There are a number of subway lines that meet here. The open air farmer's market is the premiere farmers market in my opinion in the entire city. It's a huge draw for local restaurants, residents, and tourists alike. The Union Square Holiday Market which I have previously reported about is a fun Holiday attraction. NYU is practically next door. The restaurants around the park are packed with people and there is plenty of shopping so bring your check book. Living around Union Square is highly desirable, you can find high end condos, established buildings like 1 Irving Pl ( Zeckendorf Towers), no-fee rental buildings, beautiful lofts, whatever you are looking for is available for sale.
UNION SQUARE CONSTRUCTION ZONE
If you have been to Union Square lately, you can't help but see the construction zone. An estimated 18 month renovation began at the end of 2008 and will include a renovation including an increase in the parks playground space, improving the public plaza, renovating the bandshell structure, a restaurant, and to improve the aesthetic beauty of the park itself.
