Having It All

By
Education & Training with Advantage Solutions Group

" You can have it all... you just can't have it all at once." As I am designing and living a life I love, and helping others to do the same, the dual goals of achievement and personal bliss seem to compete, frustrate, or simply tire us to exhaustion. There is an elusiveness to the times when everything is handled and there is time for it all.

If you are like me, most things look like opportunities.... There is so much worth doing. There are so many obligations and roles. There are so many ways to make a difference, to earn a living , to express that uniqueness each of us is blessed to carry forward into the world and lives of others. There are still so many things on my list of 100 Things I want to do be & have in this lifetime that aren't checked off yet!

I feel the frustration and I watch my clients struggle with a keen longing to express a level of excellence with our work while balancing and longing for enough time to live a life that is inclusive of the personal and family roles.

Lately, the old song from the movie Dirty Dancing plays the lyric in my head about "having the times of our lives." That longing, it seems, is there but many days the reasons "why not" seem more real than the ability to achieve that fine balance.

I've been focusing this year on the benefits of simplifying. The work I've done in my life & with many of my amazing, inspiring clients this year seems to echo this theme. With the uncertainness that we can't control, it is imperative to make conscious choices every day that bring you to a happy peacefulness or whatever your description would be when it is all working.

 Some ideas:

  • Keep a gratitude journal
  • Give away some money!
  • Do something to nurture your spirit or your body
  • Go outside and marvel at this amazing planet
  • Listen to the sound of children laughing

What do you do to maximize the bliss????

I've recently taken to walking.  I've had some days where things just fall apart, no matter what I do.  And instead of getting frustrated and upset, I just take myself out for a walk.  It gets me into the open air, away from my computer and kicks up the endorphins in my brain, so that once I get home, the day doesn't seem so bad anymore.

Sunday afternoon is my favorite time to maximize  bliss.

Today is a rare rainy afternoon in the desert. I am listening to the soulful melodies of Danny Doyle, my favorite Irish balladeer. I love to weep whilst Danny sings classic tunes about fallen herous and expatriates. The air is heavy with a Sonoran perfume and the winged creatures are ecstatic between showers.

I have a pot of chicken soup simmering to perfection ... and a pot of Irish Breakfast tea within easy reach of my laptop perch.

Life does not get better than this!

This is my personal recipe for maximizing bliss.

Great post Joeann!  For me, I pause to remember how truly temporary and short-lived life actually is for each of us and to appreciate the simple beauty in things, both large and small.  Watching my kids laugh and be kids is priceless!

So many focus on irrelevant items, the ones that really don't count.  Understanding "The Why" makes life so much simplier.  Keeping life simplier for me means not reacting but act upon.  To focus on the thoughts and not the emotions.  When one has the scales of life balanced, the bliss falls into place and it is amazing!

Thank you for such a great post.

Over 2,000 homes sold…..

I take time off every week just to something that is meaningless.  If that is walking downtown with my wife that is what we will do.  The only way that I can really do it is by setting it up as an appointment and steering all other appointments around my time.  Took me 20 years to figure that one out...

Your messages are always so lightly uplifting, Joeann!

I treat myself in several nuturing ways each week. I gave up on "daily" because that begat more stress.  I know if I go to fitness center's heated therapy pool, swim and do water exercises and at least 1 water yoga class per week, my body will love me back and provide energy for all the other things " I really want to do!"

Thanks to cable, I can save half hour programs from Joyce Meyer to start my spirit in the right direction with my first cup of Gevalia most morings, regardless of the time my body and brain decide "It is time to get UP Pat!" I journal, listen to my favorite CD's while writing notes to family and friends. Then I spike my oatmeal with a fresh fruit with a few chopped pecans. Peaches, blueberies or blackberries are favorites. Such a decadent way to start my day! A good start makes the day and life much more pleasant and managable.

Then it is Power Hour time. I start with a few friends or family with a goal of a short hello with an encouraging word or message. Some days they need more, and I try to be there, as so many people were here for us as Dick struggled with his cancers. BUT I never call 2 daughters the same morning... 2 are LONG winded and I will never get to work if I do!

And the day goes on... aas does life. Life is awesome! Have agood one! !
