"It is inexcusable and irresponsible to get bogged down in distraction and delay while millions of Americans are being put out of work; It is time for Congress to act. It is time to pass an Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan to get our economy moving again...” President Barack Obama in a speech on February 6, 2009

I am becoming dismayed with the speed at which the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan is moving toward passage. We all would like to see something done to help revive our economy. But, exactly what is in this legislation?

I decided to spend some time yesterday attempting to find out. I searched for about two hours and never could find an understandable summary of what has been passed by the House and being debated and amended by the Senate.

I did go to the House of Representatives web sit and pulled up a copy of HR-1, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. You can search the bill on The Library of Congress—Thomas.

I then searched on the US Senate web site. There are no less than 468 possible amendments listed to HR-1.

Again, exactly what is in this legislation?

I continued searching for specifics, a summary if you will. Then I came across a blog written by Michelle Malkin, which as of yesterday afternoon the specifics of the Collins/Nelson compromise amendment was not even available for any one to see.

Within a few minutes I heard Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Senator from Texas, on TV. She stated she had not even seen the language of the amendment. Oh my God!

Then just this morning I found an update, again on Michelle Malkin’s blog, with the amendment. This is a 778 page document!

How can we possibly know exactly what is in this legislation?

This is an omnibus spending bill. This is not an economic stimulus package.

Why can’t Congress just deal with Economic Stimulus items and then deal with other spending initiatives later?

We know why. This is their opportunity to load us up with pork and agenda that the American people would not support.

Are you aware that 50% of the TARP money has not even been distributed!

What is the rush? Beware folks; we are being sold down the river.

I agree with President Obama, that the situation is serious. But I believe it is inexcusable and irresponsible to rush through a $850+ billion spending bill.

I have emailed my representative and senators the following:

What in the world are you people thinking? I've just spent a few minutes looking at HR-1

Why can't Congress deal with the issues at hand? This is not about economic stimulus. This is an omnibus spending bill.

There may well be provisions that are worthy. But are they not worthy of debate and public scrutiny?

Congress is going to rush through close to a trillion in spending under the guise of a crisis. Didn't we do this just 4 months ago?

Vote no.

I too have been emailing my senators and house reps.  Spending on pork is not the solution and rushing a bill through without disclosure is more of the same, not the change I voted for and want.  Where is the disclosure and transparency?  I agree we need to get it right.  I really can get worse and that's the last thing we need right now.

My husband has spent many hours researching as you!  His comment is that they will pass this Economic Stimulus Package and our grandchildren and great grandchildren will have to deal with the fall out!  We, too, have contacted the "powers that be" at our capitol, but is anyone really listening.  If they are, how could they vote yes when the American people are saying NO??

Great post!  Thank you for taking the time to confirm the truth!

I am with you Let the light shine on this for a couple of days.  It seems that they don't want us to know wht they are doing.

We know it spending.   And we know it is on pet projects.

Not my guy but the HOPE and CHANGE he promised is none at all.

I'm not sure that we need speedy passage of legislation that no one understands and that will mortgage the future of Americans for generations to come.

This is the time where level headed leadership is needed, not politicians running around shouting the sky is falling.

I agree, this bill will only help the bank and believe we ought let citi corp fail and a few others.  there is more opportunity in new start ups that keeping the statis quo.

Kevin Robinson blogged a little bit of humor on this very subject!  I read it and even though I laughed I wanted to cry!  What is this country coming too?  Where we package a stimulus bill and included are alot of things that shouldn't be included, where all is confusing and absolutely the agenda of many in Washington!

I say keep this coming!  Haven't seen anyone who is commenting "for" this bill.  Doesn't that say something!

It seems that if Congress and the President were truely interested and concern with stimulating the economy they would get away from the age old practice of adding "pork" to the bill. They need to slow down and be sure what this legislation accomplishes is to stimulate the economy and not satisfy the whims of the people on the hill that can't get the amendments passed as stand alone legislation.

10:17am • #9

Apparently there are other hidden agendas in this so-called Stimulus Package as well.

Blame the banks.  Especially The Fed.  Ahhhh The Central Bank, the true controllers of our economy!

Jay, I spent the better part of yesterday sifting through the same information you did and felt the same frustration you did.  You did a great job of summing up the entire frustrating situation and capturing my sentiments exactly.  The Spendulus Package contains some great ideas, it's too bad it also contains ALL the Democrats payoffs to their constituents.  The fact they are hijacking our current economic situation, wrapping in up in a big confusing bow, and calling it a Stimulus Package is reprehensible!

Mark, yes transparency was supposed to be one of the hallmark's of change. In fact there was to be a "sunshine policy", waiting five days before signing a bill into law. This has laready been violated twice.

whitehouse.gov say this is due to technical issues with the Congressional calendar. What?????

Lynn, I would like to think they would listen, but their arrogance may be standing in the way. We the people, are, after all, a bunch of unsophisticated hayseeds.

There is one place we can be heard. The ballot boxes will be open again in two years.

Tom, I think this bill is more about massive spending than it is about the banks. I just looked for a few minutes on increases going to food stamps. 25% increases and such. May be needed with unemployment, but not really to stimulate the economy.

Made my head hurt.

I agree, but, I see no relief coming with all the jobs lost.  It is not going to stop.  Our economy is not going to come back to life for several months, years.  What took less than five years to destroy will not have a quick fix.  Our government does not know what to do.  They have not had this issue since the great depression.  Now they will try and copy cat those years.  Wrong!  That will not work, as there are so many businesses that are gone, for good.  Trust is gone.  Hope however is not, may God take care of us.  We are in trouble.

Michael, I could not get the link to open. I will try later. A lot of hidden agendas for certain.

The bill contains 1.2 billion for State and Local Law enforcement assistance. Another example of something that should be considered on its own merit. To bundle it as hurry up we need economic stimulus is inexcusable.

Tony, I'm not certain where you coming from, but no doubt the banks have plenty of blame to shoulder. This bill does not appear to be targeting to the banks, just wild spending.

Jay, Great Post!! Here are a few of my concerns as well.

OK, I have heard some say, "Come on give Obama time and a chance" he has not done anything to really screw up our Great Country" I am so ashamed of Americans for being so apathetic to believe this BS.

1. The stimulus package. This is being debated and sides have been drawn. PORK vs Tax cuts.I would like to keep my money please.  The Fierce Urgency of PorkThe Age of Obama begins with a frenzy of old-politics influence peddling.

2. Hiring tax evaders, pornography lawyers, and oh yea an ostentatious executive order banning lobbyists was immediately followed by the nomination of at least a dozen current or former lobbyists to high position. Now let's talk about what is going on just under the radar. That Americans should be outraged about.

 3. The closing of Guantanamoe Bay.

Obama "Saying that "our ideals give us the strength and moral high ground" to combat terrorism, President Obama signed executive orders ending the Central Intelligence Agency's secret overseas prisons, banning coercive interrogation methods and closing the Guantánamo Bay detention camp within a year." Today we can be proud Americans again.

What, we have not been attacked in 7 years. Crazy!!!

4. As an American I am outraged at the it is all America's fault mentality. Please read this article of Obama reaching out to Muslims. Our military has sacrificed for this great country don't dare tell me we have not reached out and died for Muslim's. Outreach, Yes. Apology, No.(By Charles Krauthammer, January 30, 2009

3. Signed an executive order to allow my tax dollars to pay for abortions in foreign countries.

4. Stealing the CensusThe Unconstitutional White House effort to create a permanent voting majority by allowing Rahm Emanuel to oversee the 2010 census. From Fox News (which is still the only Media outlet covering this story):Utah's congressional delegation Read more...

He has done all this and more in just the first 30days in office.

I am outraged and as Americans I believe we better wake up before it is to late!!

Anne and Eddie, moving control of the census to the White House is indeed troubling. Particularly since they use statistical analysis to finalize census data. Democrat control for years to come?

Alice, excellent points all. In a hurry right now, but I'm coming back to follow your links. As I watched the press conference last night I'm struck by how how forceful a speaker Obama is. We are in real trouble of being taken over by a liberal agenda for which we may never unravel.

Pork in the Current Bill passed Yesterday with 3 Republican votes. (edit/delete)

Here is a list of the current pork in the bill voted yesterday.

Excess Pork

Please call your senators now and let them know that this current stimulus bill should not pass.

The $15,000 tax credit will not be worth anything if this bill passes.
