Rain is a Beatles tribute band that played at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, TN Friday evening (Feb. 6).  I used to be a big Beatles fan, so when I saw they were playing nearby and so close to my wedding anniversary date, I knew how we would be celebrating this year.  They were incredible and we had such a great time.  If you would like to see if they are coming to your area, check out their website, Rain.

Both my husband and I grew up in Memphis, so I was surprised that he had never set foot inside the Orpheum Theater.  This is a beautiful building and I think Memphis should do a better job of promoting the events that go on there.  Its just a short walk from all the clubs on Beale Street.

I did not take my camera with me, but I managed to get a few grainy shots with my phone.  Visit the Orpheum website to see much better images of this spectacular theater and see if their upcoming attractions.

Stage at Orpheum Theater MemphisBuilt in 1890 as an Opera House, the theater became part of the Orpheum circuit of vaudeville in 1907.

Fire destroyed the original theater in 1923 and it was rebuilt in 1928.  It was turned into a movie theater in the 1940's and remained that way until 1976.

The movie company sold the building and there was talk of demolishing it to make room for an office building, but thankfully it was restored to its over-the-top glory in 1984.

Believe it or not, I have been to events at this theater ranging from The Blues Awards to a concert by the rock groups Thin Lizzy and Nazareth.  Okay, those last two were in my high school days.

This is really a MUST SEE if you are going to be visiting the Memphis area. Chandelier at Orpheum Theater Memphis

Thanks for the great information. I really enjoy learning the history of these places. I grew in Memphis as well but I do recall field trips to the Orpheum.

Frank-thanks for stopping by to comment.  I really like historical buildings like this and love to see them renovated.  I hated it when they tore down the beautiful architecture of the convention center a few years back.

When we were kids going to the Mid-South Fair, my dad would always tell us to meet at the old Shelby County building every 2 hours or so on the steps to check in.

I hated when it burned down.
