This dining room in a home we staged in Cincinnati shows a perfect example of the potential to leverage the best aspects of a space and turn it into a true WOW! factor in a home.  A simple coat of paint and new carpet set the stage for updated furnishings and a successful sale!

Wow!  I am continually amazed at the difference a can of paint, some wallpaper stripper & new carpet can make.  Why don't more clients get it?

Jo: The changes you made make a huge difference. Also, removing the window treatments make a huge difference.

Michelle,  Thanks for the feedback.  We have found that in many cases it is a good idea to remove window  treatments.  If they are custom window treatments, and in good condition, we often place them neatly in a storage area so that they can be re-hung if the buyer likes them.  It is often difficult though to stage around a style that might not have broad appeal to prospective buyers.

Terry, Thank you for the compliment but I have to admit I always talk in terms of "we."  Design To Market is made up of an incredibly talented design team and we always work in pairs.  I am in no way able to take credit for this on my own!

The furniture is different also, isn't it? What a transformation, the drapery was so outdated and heavy. The room looks wonderful

Phyllis,

This is different furniture.  We actually renovated the home for the client and then staged it with our furniture.  The photos below are from the bathroom in the same house. Jo

I'm no stager.  However, whenever people ask what they can do to make their home sell faster or for more money, I reply, "Remove ALL wallpaper and paint a neutral color."  It's amazing how many people despise wall paper.

You are right BUT...sometimes it is not that easy...wallpaper that is relatively neutral, in good repair, high quality and well installed can be the exception to the rule.  If it is at all possible for us to work with existing paper we do because it is expensive to remove.  I will say though that is not often the case.

Jo,

Your rooms (and your team's) look great!!   So much better!   A question I have been running into with wallpaper, maybe you can answer -- If it has been installed when the home was built, then often the wall was left un-textured underneath.  When you remove the paper - do you have the wall textured or do you just paint right on the untextured walls?    Thanks!  Great post!

I am not sure what you mean by untextured.  We have had issues where th paper was applied directly to the dry wall without priming.  It is costly to remove and it takes repair time on the part of the painter.  I am however strongly against painting over wallpaper!

I'm with you on this one - painted over wallpaper looks like painted over wallpaper - cheap and oh so tacky.
