Has anyone taking the direct buy free look orientation or bought a membership?

I admit it looks and sounds great.  But besides Sam's Club I hate to pay monthly for anything.

Their website boast, that they are "the #1 way to buy direct for your home. Discover how you can purchase home furnishings and appliances directly from the manufacturer."

The commercials outline huge discounts of course I know it is a commercial.  They weigh the pros & cons of wholesale vs resale.

They even mention discounts on contractors.

So If you know anything about this program.  Please pass on the info. Thanks in advance for sharing.

I looked at it, and I get an uneasy feeling.  But I can't say it is bad as I have not tried it.

When you google them you find the people who have had a not so happy buying experience with this company...

I am working with a client who is a member of direct buy.....as an Interior Designer, I have been to direct buy with my client and was able to research the pricing.  Along with the membership fee there is also an 8% service charge that you pay to Direct Buy.  I could beat or match Direct Buys pricing on many items.  Direct Buy is probably good for the "do it yourselfer".  Make sure you compare apples to apples on furniture.  Direct Buy doesn't have all brands.  So, if you are building a house....you probably would probably end up with the same savings from your contractor or interior designer and you are getting valuable input and the re-assurance that your purchases are the correct ones to make.

There are many details that need to be addressed when ordering custom items and the staff at Direct Buy, in my opinion are not experts on the merchandise.  Lighting is another area that measurements are critical along with cabinets...costly mistakes can be made.  There are restocking fees involved for returns.  For example, when you purchase lighting from a lighting showroom, you are also getting knowledge and expertise from the showroom as well.  I do know that my client did not purchase his windows or doors from Direct Buy...I'm sure it had to do with price and selection.

Direct Buy is great for the experienced do-it-yourselfer, not for the average homeowner. If you have an overstock or a restock or a returned furniture store in your town, you can get better prices there.

Dee Dee, I have friends who went there to find out about becoming a member, it was over $3,500 just to join.  And if you don't join when you're invited, then they won't invite you back for 2 years.  They didn't think the prices were that great.

I wouldn't become a member because (1) there are no stores near me (2) their stuff looks awful on the TV commercial.
