stunt-gone-bad2.jpgI love extreme sports.  As a former bicylce motocross (BMX) racer, I have the jacked up knees and scrapped elbows to prove it.  However, I suspect most fans of extreme sports are really there not to see the jumps and stunts completed but for the off chance there will be some big time face plants.   MTV figured this out too and is featuring a new show called Scarred.

Scarred features videos of dirt jumpers, skateboarders, snowboarders and all kinds of other extreme sports athletes eating some serious doo doo.  I am talking pain.  Anytime I see pro athletes of major sports (basketball, football, & baseball) crying about they can't play because they sprained an ankle, I just laugh at them.  Wimps.  Try landing on your face with no helmet after failing to jump down three flights of stairs backwards on a bicycle then we can talk about needing to sit out a game.

Sometimes rate shoppers are like the athletes on Scarred.  While watching the kids on the approaches for their jumps you want to reach through the TV and stop them because you know it is going to end badly.  Every loan officer has seen it.  You try to properly counsel the client and offer a fair deal but the borrower is so focused on getting the lowest rate they go with the too good to be true internet offer not recognizing the dangers.  You know there is no way on God's green earth the loan is going to close at the rate and fees promised.  You see a big face plant coming in the form of asinine fees, inflated rates, or worse yet, lost earnest money.  But like watching Scarred, all you can do is sit back, watch, and say ouch

Hey Russell,

from one BMX'er to another - thanks for sharing that! WHY don't you race anymore??? I have to share -- I just started racing last July - if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!!! And that's what I did! I'm having sooo much fun with it! Have you ever thought about hitting the track again??

Mary, I quit racing back in '92 right as I was going to college.  Pretty much only raced NBL.  I was an expert though and hit quite a few nationals and proud to say I dropped a few big names on numerous occassions.  Honestly, I regret that I ever stopped riding.  However, I am bit old now.  I actually bought a cruiser in '99 thinking I was going to start racing again when I moved to Chicago.  Unfortunately, the tracks are not very close to the city and I don't think I can commit the time to it anymore.  I love it though and I watch races anytime they are on TV and I still follow develoments in the sport.  It is so different now though.  We wouldn't have been caught dead riding with clips.  The rhythm sections are crazy too.  We never had those too much.   Just really big doubles and triple step ups.  Some tracks had some seriously big first jumps though.  I am talking walls that you had to speed jump.  Orlando FL used to be known for their first jump.  Absolutely insane.

Looks like that one above got away from him....just like that unreal rate is going to do!  Excellent analogy.

Wow Russell! What a racing career!

Yes! you'll have to check my daughter out on www.bmxvideo.net!! Look at the Christmas Classic videos for expert, 17 & Over Women. She had an awesome ride both days! Day one she gets on fire in the last turn and blasts down the rythm section for a photo finish! She took second and missed first place by about 6 inches!

Alicia is the one in the AR profile picture with me - that was taken in Morristown Tennessee at the Thanksgiving National last year! We race NBL series. That was the first trip we "girls" made alone and we had a great experience!  You are correct about tracks being so far. There is a group trying to get one up and going in the Grand Rapids Michigan area that we would get involved in. That would be wonderful as we travel so far for practice, races etc.

I am just finishing up my first year in the 40-44 women's cruiser and having a great time! We are not anywhere near as brutal as the men! I have been told I need to race in clips - I'm going to try to continue without them! They kind of scare me! I don't bounce like I used to!!! It would be great to see you on a track sometime if you ever decide to take that cruiser for a ride!

To your success!
