Personal Safety in NEPA or ANYWHERE - Trust Your Instincts!

Your instincts can save your life; listen to them!

If you read only one book, this is the book to read: The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker. An online friend recommended it to me. She had purchased several copies of it herself, to give to her friends and family members.

Some people dismiss fear as paranoia. Christians tend to frown upon acknowledging fear, seeing it as not trusting in God for our protection. In fact, healthy fear is something that could save your life.

According to Gavin De Becker, victims of violent crime have often experienced fleeting moments of fear or suspicion, thinking that something is not right, etc. before being attacked. Unfortunately, these feelings were suppressed, ignored, or dismissed as being silly or foolish...to great harm. Trust your instincts!

In this book, De Becker teaches us to listen to our fears - maybe some would prefer the word instinct or discernment - to be alert to the signals that danger is near. Trust your instincts!

An excellent example of this "fear factor" in action can be found in this fantastic blog about personal safety and instinct by Phyllis Pafumi. When I read Phyllis' account, I immediately thought she must have read the book! She did exactly what Gavin De Becker urges us to do: she sensed that something was NOT right, and she LISTENED to her instincts and more than likely prevented a horrible tragedy from occurring, even though the store manager probably thought she was nuts.

As real estate agents, as "just" people, male or female, we must take personal safety seriously. Please, if you have not read this book, get a copy as soon as you can. Your life could depend on it....

Karen - great reminder.  Trusting my instinct is something I do.  I am alway thinking of an exit strategy real estate can be a dangerous business  because we are alway going out with strangers.

Karen this is such a great post. Without going into a long story I followed my instincts once many years ago and I know I avoided a very dangerous situation and I am sure many more since then. Thanks for posting this.

Karen, thanks for this post.  A few years back I received an upcall and the person asked me to show them a listing, which at the time was vacant.  I asked my usual questions regarding financing, when are they looking to move by, etc..  I scheduled this appointment for 4:00 that day.  A few hours passed and this person called back and asked if I could show it around 8:00 p.m. and asked if I would be the only one showing the home. That question raised a "red flag", which made me a little nervous, so I took one of the "big" men in my office with me, just in case.  We can never be too cautious in this business.

I am glad that this was found to be helpful.  Ashley posted an excellent blog that goes hand in hand with this one.  Whether you're a real estate agent in a city like Albuquerque or in the woods of the Poconos, you need to be alert and listen to your gut.  I personally believe it's from the Lord, and not listening is tantamount to being like the they guy on the roof during the flood...you know the story.  He stayed behind saying God would protect him, refusing all offers of help, "trusting God"...when in fact, he was rejecting what God sent to save him.

This is how I think our healthy fear works.  It's designed by the One we trust to get us to safety.

Karen.  In every Vacant Staging that I do I check to make sure (for myself too) that the house is able to be safe and can lock up, that nothing is out to use as a weapon (knifes, fire pokers, cork screws, silver ware) and that neighbors are alerted that the house is vacant.  I can't tell you how many of my Realtors have thanked me for this silly list.  As far as for the instinct of feeling that something isn't right.... that is up to you.  Be safe and hopefully the Stagers that you use are knowledgable about safety issues for you and themselves.

Karen, This sounds like it would be a great book to buy for my 25 year old flight attendant daughter (then I can read it first LOL).  Thanks for sharing!

Okay I was the last person that commented on this and it is a reminder that I need to order this book.  I'm writing it down right now and will try to get on Amazon tomorrow.  My daughter is coming home for Thanksgiving so I will sent it back with her.  I can of course read it first.
