Nashua to Boston Commuter Rail Picks up Steam!

Nashua to Boston Commuter Rail may be closer to becoming a reality!

The federal economic stimulus package, if passed, coupled with appointment of New Hampshire Senator, Judd Gregg, to the Obama administration may get the plans for commuter rail back on track!

New Hampshire is ready for commuter rail!

The engineering has almost been completed.  It may be possible to extend the commuter rail north of Nashua to Manchester and Concord!

George Campbell of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation reported that the Nashua to Boston commuter rail project is "shovel ready."  A recent article in the Nashua Telegraph reports that Dave Fink, president of Pan Am Systems, which owns the track estimated that the the work could be completed in about a year if everything else is in place!  New Hampshire Business for Transportation and Infrastructure annouced its support.

The New Hampshire legislature has taken the first steps to making commuter rail a reality.  A rail authority was established in 2007 and a $75 million liability cap was passed.  Steve Williams, executive director of the Nashua Regional Planning Commission pointed out that the rail is already in place for freight and only has to be upgraded.

There are still details to be worked out. Peter Griffin, president of the New Hampshire Rail Revitalization Association, has noted that the idea of commuter rail is becoming more widely accepted.  However, there are many who believe that the east - west highways should be improved rather than building a rail system.  Another significant challenge is finding a mechanism to provide a subsidy to the rail system.

In my opinion the commuter rail is vital piece to the economic development in Southern New Hampshire.  It is the centerpiece of the New Urbanism in the Nashua/Manchester corridor ~~ where people can live in and work in communities without the necessity of driving their cars.

Moreover, a commuter rail system will go a long way toward solving the problem of retaining younger workers in New Hampshire and would bring companies and workers from Massachusetts into Southern New Hampshire. Another obvious benefit is that rail will decrease the need to travel by car and will improve the environment.

What is your opinion ~~ Roads or Rails?  What would be the best source of funding for the commuter rail system going into the future?

Nashua is the best place to live in America.

Bill~  If we get this commuter rail in about a year, I will be able to come and visit you in MA and visa versa!

Sally  ~  A train to nowhere -- that doesn't make a lot of sense.  The commuter rail in So. New Hampshire would be great - especially with our winter weather.  Now, if they also have wifi on the train, everyone is set to go.

Joan, I hope you get the new rail. Commuter trains sure can make it easy to get places without the hassle of congested roads with driving a car.

Joan - More than just the economic benefits, it could improve the quality of life.   Think of all those stressed out commuter trapped behind a steering wheel.  I know  what that feels like I did it for years.

George~  One of the things I missed the most when I move from San Francisco to Nashua was the lack of good public transportation, including commuter rail!  I have now been here 12 years I still miss it!  I hope this stimulus will be just the thing that gets things rolling.  I think it will be a huge benefit to the entire region.

Gary~  I am of the opinion that getting the commuter rail is essential to the sustainability of So. New Hampshire.  We are the 5th oldest state in the Nation.  Companies are leaving NH because young people don't want to stay -- It would bring economic benefits, both short term and long term to So. New Hampshire.

Jennifer~  You are so correct -- having commuter rail will improve the quality of life.  People love New Hampshire, but our young people are moving away.  This would be a great start to insuring the economic future of the area.

Joan, I am only an hour away from the city but I'd rather take the train...here it is so convenient.  I think it would be a huge benefit to your area.

Joan, that is wonderful! My sister-in-law recently sold her home in Windham and moved to Nashua. Her husband works in Boston. Hope Nashua gets a chunk of that change!

Hi Joan - I didn't know this was in the works - won't it be great.  We're in the middle of trying to get the subway to extend through Somerville and Medford - what a process. Public transportation is the way to go but nothing comes easy it seems.

Carole~  New York has some great transportation.  It is a lot less stressful taking mass transit than trying to drive in New York -- Of course, there are those cabbies (lol)!  I had some hair raising rides in New york City when I was there on a Superfund case and taking depositions of some corporate big wigs.

Elizabeth  ~  I am keeping my fingers crossed.  It is very complex and a subsidy is necesary for mass transit systems.  Several Funding proposals have been put forth.  I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I am hoping that the withdrawal of Judd Gregg will not mean a lack of support for the commuter rail project.  I hope Judd Gregg will support it.

Ellie  ~  It is amazing that some parts of the US are sooo far behind other countries when it comes to mass transit.  It would be a great benefit in so many ways to have a good mass transit system in this area.

Sandy  I miss the commuter rail I used to ride all around the Bay Area.  It was especially nice to take BART from SF to Walnut Creek where I practiced law at the time!  I just was listening to a panel on one of the new stations describing how mass transit was one of the key factors in spurring the economy in America in the earlier days.  So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will become a reality.  Nashua and the surrounding areas would definitely benefit.

Joan,  we need more commuter trains is many places. I would also like to see the development of high speed trains connected more distant locations.

Good luck with yours. At least it may go beyond a train fro LA to Vegas. Which sounded a little porky to me, Harry Reid.

Joan, think you have lots more trains on the East Coast than we do out here, but sounds like you need it.

Too bad most of the trains are gone. The Boston & Maine RR once had a steam
train from Nashua to Boston. My family took that train in 1944 when I was 8 yrs old.
