Stairs are always a concern during a home inspection because they are one of the most likeliest places for an accident or injury to occur.  An important aspect of safety are the hand rails.  Hand rails are needed so you can grasp on to something in case you lose your balance.  Having lived in 2-story homes all my life, I can assure you that hand rails have saved me a few times.

Take a look at the picture below.  Do you see a problem?  (I think the tape measure might give it away)

The hand rail is too short. By Pillar To Post an Upland Home Inpsection company.

Yep, you guessed it, the hand rail is too high for a 1-year old child... okay, that's a joke, most 1-year olds are just walking, if that, and hand rails aren't designed for them.  The hand rail is actually much too low.  The hand rail should be 34 - 38 inches above the stair.  This hand rail was only 24-inches, therefore most people would have to bend over to reach the hand rail, and that alone could make you lose your balance.

I hope this gives you a little more information about a home inspection and its value.  Be safe out there.

This is a great thing to point out Joseph as it is something that a homeowner may not even think about.

Have a great day!

Richard, I agree.  Not only is it a safety issue, but when it is located in an investment, it's also a liability issue.

Joseph, thanks for stopping by.  I love your name by the way  :-)
