This song has been going through my mind all day! It's a Mary Mary song which has a captivating beat but even more importantly, a powerful message...
"Take these Shackles off my feet so I can Dance!"
It's part invocation, part command and all praise. Life's Shackles have a way of grounding us to the earth and stifling our core vibrancy. Sometimes they land on the feet with a loud clamp...the unexpected situation or crisis which knocks us off our moorings. But, more often I think...they steal bits of our life piece by piece through worry, stress, anxiety, resentment and anger. We don't even know that we've been shackled until we can barely move.
I've been reading an interesting book which is talking about "The Law of Flexibility." It's one of the most difficult life lessons to grasp because it involves learning how to take the stumbling blocks that life throws into our path and turning these pitfalls into opportunities.
The Law of Flexibility means we choose to take the path of 'least resistance' even when everything within us screams...this is not fair. Flexing into the source of my Strength enables me to 'walk the additional mile' and turn into the blow that intends to wound. Leaning into the challenge changes the very nature of the struggle as I become a willing participant whose choice of RESPONSE rather than REACTION brings a different perspective to the issue at hand.
But the inherent power of this law is within its power to transform the circumstance through acceptance rather than resistance. Through the practise of this law, we learn that nothing is really 'as it seems' in the moment. Often life's greatest challenges serve as the dirt under which the diamonds in the rough lie undisturbed despite the turbulence raging over head.
So, there are times when you must release, bend, move towards and embrace in order to understand, learn, conquer and win. It seems diabolical and weird, but it's the truth.

Hey Lola! I enjoyed the Mary Mary song and your post is very insightful. I always enjoy reading your blog because I most certainly learn something from each one...so keep blogging!
Hi Lola, what's interesting lately with what you talked about the path of least resistance, I have been taking the path of MOST resistance in several things, like exercise. It has been very rewarding. Quite backwards from the natural flow of things, but I love it.
I haven't heard anything from Mary Mary in a long time. And I've never read the book you mentioned, but I do use the word "respond" instead of "react". When we respond, we think about our reponse, and act accordingly. Reacting is usually a quick, sometimes unreasonable reaction. =) Oh, and I used to date a really annoying guy who would intentionally push my buttons, just so he could say "Act. Don't react." He was SO annoying! ROFL!
Lola that sounds like an incredible book. I can identify with letting things cripple you. My childhood nearly destroyed me but it was only through God's love that I began to build a solid foundation on Him! I really believe that they should have a course in high school on how to keep things positive. It is all about attitude.
Yesterday my kids and I had dental appointment for teeth cleaning. My daughter was going on and on about how much she hates the dentist. I told her, Lindsey, I am not especially fond of going to the dentist either . . . BUT, you can choose to look at how fortunate we are that we have insurance and we can get our teeth cleaned. Many people don't and have pain they can't do anything about.
This is a fundamental truth that I believe. This morning I was sharing a similar message with my BNI group. It was called learning to dance in the rain. "life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...Its about learning how to dance in the rain!"
Lola,
Thanks for the great video. I had heard that song before, but I never watched the video!! :) Love it!! When my husband and I separated, I was SO sad...and yet I now see God's BLESSING written all over the circumstances of my life (and the life of my children, too!!) You are right...part invocation, part command, and ALL praise!! :)
Keep dancing!!
Lisa, appreciate your comment. Responding is very diffferent from reacting. It does require a different level of discipline, but usually yields more effective results.
Tami, what a marvellous example, and opportunity to turn your challenge into something good in the life of your own family. We can allow our wounds to incapacitate us or take that energy and use it in a constructive way like the example you shared. Thanks for adding to this discussion.
Being proactive, isn't that what you're talking about? Responding is proactive, reacting is reactive. One happens before an event, one happens after an event. We need to be proactive instead of always waiting for whatever is going to happen to us in life. Take your business by the horns and make it what you want it to be! Stop being shackled by fear of what could happen! Dance!!
Kathy
Great song, thanks for your insights. Kathy has made another great point also..take your business by the horns and make it what YOU want it to be! Dance, Dance, Dance!!!!
Amen! What an uplifting song! I have a little saying that I like to use...If you feel fear - then just do it afraid! I believe we need to run towards fear, embrace it and not run the other way. This is the only way we can turn our fears into opportunities!
Have you ever recorded you story about the fishermen and the voice from the shore? That was so powerful!
