Have you noticed how many homes have huge ice dams this year? Even homes with adequate insulation and ventilation seem to have them. This goes against current wisdom, but I believe it is in part because newer homes now have only pot or ridge venting as well as soffit venting. When we get massive amounts of snow, the outflow vents naturally become blocked off, thus limiting ventilation and increasing the possibility of ice dams. Old gable venting does not have that issue. I am not suggesting we return to having gable vents installed on new homes, but I guess in Michigan, we need to be more proactive about keeping vents cleared. OK, who wants to go up on the roof to do that? Not me!
