You will smile until you realize you had to sell or Stage a house just like this

Thought everyone could use a mini lesson in colour today.

This website has stories about interior indiscretions that will make you wonder what the homeowners were thinking when they put their home on the market.

We have all been there-either as a Realtor or as a Home Stager.

Trying to market a house that has been painted entirely in burnt orange.

Or every surface has been painted shades of green or blue or purple.

When you are selling your home, loud vibrant colours will not market your property to the most people.

How many homes have you seen with bright orange walls everywhere?

That's exactly the same number of buyers you will attract to your property for sale.

I tactfully suggest to my clients that a neutral colour will attract more buyers when they are looking online at listing photos.

Not to mention shorten the number of days on market.

When buyers leave a property painted like this, all they are talking about is the bright orange paint throughout the main floor living area. They miss the features of the property entirely. Wow! That is so bright, I had to put on sunglasses. lol I think the best color is real estate beige, it goes with everything.

Michelle, I think you could have some fun with this one. You know how they do the "green screen" for weather broadcasts? Get matching orange shirt and pants and do a marketing video in front of the orange walls. You would get a really interesting "talking head" effect that would certainly have buyers and sellers talking and probably end of with millions of hits on you tube. Thanks for the morning chuckle.

I know we live in a cold, snowy area of the country and that painting a colour like this is very warm and cozy for when you are living there. But when it comes to selling, neutral is the only way to go if you want less DOM and are asking top dollar in this tough selling market.

If you click through the link in the post you will find the first story actually mentions the homeowner wearing the same colour as the walls and disappearing except for his head and hands.

Now I have to confess that I have a wall in our family that is painted "mango" . . . I love it -- but it would be painted a neutral color if I was selling my home! I've done three consultations this week and seen walls painted bright blue, bright purple, dark maroon, dark rust and dark yellow. Seems like I'm a broken record . . paint a neutral color, paint a neutral color!

Wow, that's a colour alright! I hope your home owners understood what you were saying when you mentioned neutralizing. I'll bet they absolutely love that colour since it's everywhere. Homes like that one are so great to stage because with a lick of paint and a little re-arranging it looks brand new.

Unfortunately they did not change the colour, nor did they have me stage the home.

I know I could have helped to market this home, but sometimes clients are so attached to their love of a colour that they cannot see why anyone else wouldn't love it too.

In this market, it is not the time to be emotionally attached to your home. You have plans to move on, so you have to do what is necessary to get where you are going and start to live your new plans.

I can top your bright orange! This week I did a staging consultation for a townhome with bright yellow in the foyer, down the hall the living room was painted a bright purple and the kitchen, off the hallway, was painted a bright red. This home has been on the market for 60 days and the MLS listing description reads "this home boasts vibrant colors". Well, that was an understatement! It should have read "Garish, Mardi-Gras" colors. No wonder this home has been sitting on the market all this time. Have to love neutral beige!

Hi Karen, I hadn't thought about it like that, but you're right. I love orange probably more than most people but only as an accent. I remember my husband buying a bright orange car before we were married. It had a black stripe down the centre of it. That didn't work for me either! Too much of a good thing.

Yes I remember my burnt orange home! Here's a photo. We neutralized with white bedding but neutral walls would've been preferable!

Hi Annie, I think your solution is perfect for the burnt orange room pictured. Unfortunately, my burnt orange dilemma was the entire main floor. No opportunity to use white as a foil to the orange. Dark brown sofas, tv cabinet, kitchen pub tables and chairs etc. It is still on the market with no showings. I have contacted the Realtor to see what the feedback has been and it is a suspected. No takers on the "orange home".

Well yes a whole floor that color would be awful! Hopefully they will realize they have to paint.

I come across them sometimes because some people around here like the SW look with accessories, that is hard to neutralize.

Hi Cindy, it really is hard for some people to let the memories go of their home and that is why it is hard for them to change a colour or store something away. Once they make the mental disconnect and decide that they really are moving, the suggestions are carried out to sell the home. It's just getting the seller to that point before the listing photos are taken and the showings start!

Michelle -- I'm happy to confess that my daylight basement family room has a bright "mango" colored wall and it has really transformed the space to light and bright . . . but if I was selling you know what I'd be doing -- REPAINTING!
