REALTORS: Don't forget what it was like to buy your first home...

Often times Realtors are in the business so long that they often forget what it was like to buy their first home.  I often times catch myself speaking way above a buyers head and don't realize that I might as well be talking Greek.  All the terms, the documents and the buying process are so common to me.

Sometimes it is important to go back to the basics and pretend you know nothing just to see the buying process from the buyer's eyes.  I am going to make a brochure explaining the entire home buying process for just this reason.  I was with a buyer today who wasn't even sure who wrote a purchase agreement.  That really caught me off guard especially since he had made a decision to buy after 10 minutes.

Naturally we love a quick sale but I started to ask myself if he really knew what he was getting into.  The interesting part was he wanted to buy vacant land and build immediately.  Most people I believe are scared to death at the thought of building a new home.

I went back and made sure he completely understood the entire process and what was involved with building a new home.  I am absolutely convinced he will buy and build.  I also know he is going in with eyes wide open as well.

Hi Jules,

I couldn't agree with you more.  I am now working with a couple, first-time buyers and they are not only scared to death...they're terrified to even take the first step of pre-qualifying. Just looking at all the paperworks to fill-out is overwhelming for them already.  That's why it is very important that clients know you are with them every step of the way and that you are truly looking out for their welfare on top of everything... We always have to put ourselves on their shoes, feel how they feel and act from it.  Sometimes, I find myself not treating my clients "clients" but my own friends or relatives, so in that case, I am always reminded to deal with them with respect, honesty, even if it means compromising some of my time explaining what they're getting into, I go that extra mile..I know I can sleep well at night.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful thought!

Marizel

Hi Jules.  Great post!  You are certainly right that many real estate professionals do sometimes forget that much of the public has no idea how the process works.  It's really important to explain everything to each client.  By doing so, you'll likely have a client for life since you'll be someone they can trust.
