What is HubPages?

Just in case your mind wasn't reeling enough from the amount of data and work it takes to maintain an effective social media presence, let me introduce one more: HubPages. Actually, HubPages has been around for a little while and it has quite a large audience with over 9.1 million unique views last year. It's kind of like Squidoo in that it allows a user to establish himself or herself as an "expert" in a specific industry, but with one major difference. It taps into the Google AdSense API to share ad revenue with writers and posters - also called "Hubbers." And while you probably won't get rich off of the ad revenues themselves, its just an extra little cherry on top of what is a powerful information distribution platform.

What is a Hub?

Hubbers write articles on specific subjects in “Hubs”.  A Hub is a page within HubPages that houses your article. Hub pages are given descriptive titles with the goal of being called up when a search is done for information related to the published article. HubPages has a unique ranking system. Each hub receives a ranking score between 0-100, with 100 being the best score.  Hub scores are determined by the quality and originality of the content provided by the creator.  The total number of prior Hubs created is also taken into account when a Hub is scored.  Hub rankings works much like Google rankings, it determines where the Hub will show up in a search.  Tags are also added to the Hubs to gain exposure when someone searches for information related to your articles through and outside search engine.

What are Capsules?

Each Hub has “Capsules.”  These Capsules are basically sections within the Hub page.  These different Capsules house text, photos, embedded videos, links, polls, news, and comments all related to the published article.  Each time a new article is published a new Hub along with its Capsules are created under the same business or personal HubPages account.

Why would you want to incorporate HubPages into your web marketing strategy?

As mentioned earlier the HubPages system provides a search friendly infrastructure that drives traffic to Hubs from search engines such as Google and Yahoo.  When you join the HubPages community you will increase your SEO standing on your site and blogs by linking your articles.  HubPages has more than 56,000 links alone coming in from Yahoo. HubPages gives you the opportunity to establish yourself or company as an expert while gaining followers you can direct back to your web site or blog.

Are You Telling Me I Have to Do More Writing?!?

I know what you’re thinking, “I don’t have time to be writing more articles, and I’m barely keeping up with my blog.” Relax, you can recycle some of the articles you write in your blog and transfer them into Hubs.  I’d suggest duplicating some of the articles and split your other articles between your blog and HubPages account.
