I try to update people, primarily Washington State Inspectors, as to the happenings at the Washington State Home Inspector Licensing Advisory Board. Well, we have another board meeting coming up next week on Tuesday.

I do not know that there will be much in the way of fireworks at this meeting, however, the basic agenda is below. Since these are public meetings, interested parties should plan to attend.

One agenda item, that could be of interest, involves what ancillary inspection services an inspector might offer to a client. The law reads that an inspector, after an inspection, may not do any repairs to a property for a year after the inspection. The thing is, it is important to further define this to make sure that an inspector is not restricted from further "inspection" related activities at any time. Sometimes an inspector needs to go back on site, for a fee, to do the job right.

In case you have not heard, the state is planning to eliminate most boards and advisory committees. It is my understanding, since home inspector licensing is so new, that they plan to keep our board in operation into the year 2010. After that, from stories I have read in the news, it too will become extinct with state regulators administering the profession. I know this is not popular with some inspectors, and groups who supported the legislation with the idea that working home inspectors would be involved in the process, but it looks like extinction is the future for almost all boards in the state.

Steven, I was talking to a hi from your area while I was in Dallas and he said that due to budget constraints, the hi licensing in WA may be on the ropes. Since you are on the board, I thought that I would get it straight from the horses mouth...

Michael,

There are those who would like it to go back as it was. Highly unlikely. They are eliminating many of the boards, likely ours in a year. Does that mean the laws go away....nope. Just means that state regulators, who are not as familiar with the field as the seven inspectors on the board are, would be calling all the shots without industry advice. That is what it means. I wrote a blog on this general topic yesterday....check it out here. I think licensing on the ropes might mean inspectors licensed, but on the ropes, because there will not be peer guidance, just the regulators. So, anyone rejoicing that the law might go away, just does not get it. Chances of it being repealed are really slim. Chances of it being gutted are really slim. Most likely option is regulation without peer influence -- laws changed, modified without input from those who are working in the field. Classic example -- the mold bill that was shot down this week with the help of the current board, which was against that idea proposed by a legislator. If the board dies, we should get ready for that kind of additions and changes to the law in abundance.
