Caleb's seen a lot of Baltimore already, but on one day he encountered two creatures closer to his size. One was fluffy, one was cuddly, and he will never be the same.
We started by getting together with friends in a local park for some fresh air and to meet their adorable new daughter, recently adopted from Russia. Lauren and Marco recorded their adventures and misadventures with foreign adoption in a blog, and have started another to share life with "Cupcake", their little girl's screen name. It was a beautiful morning, and Cupcake decided Caleb was just delicious. Good thing he's such a trooper – Cupcake literally took his arm off!
After a bit of first aid, we set out to see Sam and Anita. We've stayed in touch after they bought their home in Baltimore County eight years ago, and have shared parties and holiday celebrations at their home. Anita said, "When are you coming over to see the progress on our addition?" Being a Type E and spur of the moment kind of gal, I said, "I'm on my way, but is it OK if a bring a friend?" So off we went for a visit.
An addition? Goodness, I have been in homes much smaller than this two-level addition that has access from the kitchen and also from the master bedroom area. Besides the swimming pool with custom tile and hot tub, there's a 119" TV. Sam took Caleb into the pool and hot tub – thank goodness he was dressed right for this excursion! While Caleb took a dip, Anita and I chatted about the charity she founded, Kids Helping Hopkins. She's a music teacher, and the driving force behind this educational program sponsored by Baltimore County Schools that has raised almost $1 million to help support young patients and their families at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Involvement in Kids Helping Hopkins is an excellent way for students to learn the value of service to the community.
Caleb had a chance to meet Anita's friend, Fluffy, too. After his experience with Cupcake he kept his distance, even though Fluffy is close to his size and a real sweetheart.
Then it was time for us to head off the Caleb's big going away party. That's right – he's heading to Mariana Wagner in Colorado, but first we had a final celebration in his honor. More about that next time.
