Breakfast food is, well, good food that goes to the inner parts of your soul and reminds you of home cooking or places that you have visited.  There are numerous eateries that give the claim of good food for breakfast but often the feeling of eating plasticized hash brown potatoes and toast with liquefied butter substance etched on the surface leaves your stomach aching and flush with an unsatisfied feeling.

Hubcaps, on the corner of Locust and Bonanza Street in Walnut Creek, CA.  has an atmosphere that is best described as diner with an automobile theme.  It is well lit with natural light pouring in from windows on both sides of the restaurant that allow you to see out as well as everyone outside too see in.  The seating is almost entirely booths with a counter in the middle for those of you that are solo.

As soon as I sat down my server came to me promptly, which I like, and asked what I wanted.  "How's the Chorizo and eggs?"  I asked.  He looked me dead in the eye and said, "really good".  This is a dish that when done right is riveting experience for the taste buds.  When done wrong the after taste and grease will remain with you long after you expire from this earth.

The presentation was just right, chorizo and eggs scrambled together sprinkled with jack and cheddar on top with just enough shininess to let you know that the eggs were not overcooked and rubbery.   In the center of the plate were pan roasted red potatoes, what they call "country potatoes" and off to the side a garnish of green leaf lettuce topped with ample sliced ripe strawberries, cantaloupe, and red seedless grapes.  The choice of corn or flour tortillas is given and I would recommend, since this dish is not for the calorie conscious, that you go with the flour tortilla.

(A bit about flour tortillas:  The debate rages on as to whether they should be steamed and served, in which case they become a bit sticky on the outside and loose the subtle texture, or heated up on a flat grill so that they get a little brown crunchiness that lends a nice "bite" to the tortilla.  I prefer the latter and this is what Hubcaps presented.)

The flavor was good, a nice balance between the chorizo, which can be overpowering, and the eggs, which were cooked just right.  A slight amount of grease from the chorizo is present in each bite full but this is to be expected, and welcomed.  I would suggest, putting the fork down, tearing off a piece of tortilla scooping up some of the chorizo and eggs to create a magnificent mouthful.  This is the way it should be done.  The portion sizes are large enough to split with a friend, or feed one bottomless stomach or a small school of piranhas so get ready to waddle out if you are going to tackle this alone.

If you want some good breakfast food in a nice atmosphere and don't mind being challenged with parking then Hubcaps Diner is the place for you.

Thanks Desiree.  As soon as I am in Kauai I am going to the Eggery.  Healthy meal, it is not, heart warming - it is.
