Home Stagers are you a Simon, Paula or Randy when it comes to your clients?

By
Home Stager with Home Star Staging

Truth be told whenever I watch American Idol I often find myself thinking like Simon Cowell when the words he speaks come forth from his gob in his critique of the contestants.  If you search your heart you may admit that Simon is pretty right on in his assessment of many of these folks and as a industry expert he should know a good from poor singer. However I would never in a million years say some of the things he does in the hurtful manner in which he says it.

Yes, Simon's scathing remarks and harsh constructive criticism make for good TV, but I would never want to offend or intentionally hurt a client.

Now Paula Abdul is consistently sweet and gushy in her praise for various contestants, however she delivers her critiques with the gentle hand of compassion and understanding, not the iron mallet of Mr. Cowell. Often times however I think that feelings of the contestants override her constructive judgement.  After all they are there not only to perform but to learn how they can improve and become the next American Idol. A soft hand in these situations and competitions is not what they need, but her gentle manner and kind heart are much appreciated I'm sure by the deer in the headlights Idol wannabes.

We could all use a little Paula compassion in our home staging consulting strategy but we need to also give feedback that can be used to improve upon.

Randy Jackson is a funny one. I can't always tell what he's going to do or say. He seems to assess Simon and Paula's reactions and then combines them in with his own take.  He's literally funny, engaging and entertaining - I have yet to grow tired of him saying  "daaawg" to the contestants.  Randy has stayed back in terms of how he is featured on the show but what he says also makes for good critique but turns it towards himself and personal tastes at times with the phrase, "it's just not gonna do it for me  dawg".

Good natured Randy humor always lightens the mood and gets conversation going however make sure it's about the success of the sale, not what we personally like.

(Sorry new judge I don't know enough about you yet)

Well this brings me back to the topic of this blog, Home Stagers which one are you?

When you visit a client and make a home staging assessment on their home do you

  • Go in no holes barred and make them cry with the results like Simon?
  • Hold their hand, even cry with them in each room and gently tell them (not wanting to hurt their feelings) what they can to do to make their home look its best possibly like Paula?
  • Approach the situation in a joking and entertaining manner & let them know they have to get rid of the "dawgs!" ala Randy?

OR

Are you a good combination of all 3?

  • Are you able to assess the situation like an industry expert?
  • Can you handle a few tears and laughs along the way while not hurting your client's feelings?
  • Do you give your clients what they need to improve the house and move on to be the

Karen ~ Fun blog (I'm an American Idol fan).  Simon is usually always right in his assessments, but doesn't deliver the news in a way that I'd want to ... after all, my clients are paying me, and my service includes giving them the respect that they deserve.  Paula, on the other hand, does a great job in her role in the show, but I'd prefer to show empathy when it's appropriate without being too "gushy."  I also appreciate Randy's humor and often incorporate it into my talks with clients, because humor can deflect a lot of other stuff and show them it's OK to laugh.  But there is a fine line between "giving it to them straight" and doing so in a warm and friendly way.

It's important to have a balance and actually know your audience.  The seller, depending on their personality can take different methods.  But it is important to be tactful and not insulting.  And this was a great analogy.

Looking forward to working with you to help bring some great suggestions to my client's home in McKinney.  I imagine you will be like Paula ... deliver the message in kind words but be honest with the bottom line.  No sugar coating in our business if we are there to obtain results you have to hold no punches on suggestions.  I always do that when I am visiting with my clients but say to them ... I am hear to give my recommendation and you get to make the business decision on your choices.  Most of the time they just need someone that sees with a different pair of eyes what they have overlooked.  See you Monday!

Maureen I know you are a great combination of all 3 and then some. Your projects are always stellar performances!

You're right Terrylynn about seller's personalities and what they can take and we need discernment in order to determine that.  Some are no nonsense, tell me exactly like it is and others have such emotional ties to the house or mixed feelings about selling that it's a very sensitive situation and we must be able to gauge our audience (as my son the actor says, you never know how your audience is going to react to your performance!)

Hi Connie, I am so looking forward to meeting you as well! I already feel I know you from your blogs and commentary.

You are absolutely right about giving recommendations to obtain results - the successful sale of their home! It is my belief that my job isn't complete unless I provide fair and objective information that will help them achieve that end, even if it "hurts" - it's necessary to move forward, after all that is their goal right?

No doubt about it. I'm a Randy. My mom is a Simon, and we don't let her talk much at first, lol. Sue is totally a Paula.

Funny blog!

I love American Idol, I'm a big fan.  I think this is going to be a great season.  Your post is awesome!  I think I tend to approach most everything with humor, like Randy.  But I've got a lot of Simon hiding down inside screaming to get out.  My Simon shows himself in my personal and family life plenty, but not on the job.

Karen-I think that I seem to have a Simon moment (a very small one) during each staging consultation. Like the time I walked into a house that had been completed painted inside and had brand new carpet installed. The door swung open and the smoke billowed out. Yikes! I (using the Paula approach) explained that they needed to refrain from smoking in the house now that it was on the market. Then progressed through the tour of the house. Walked into the master bedroom to be assaulted with the strong stench of freshly smoked cigarettes. I said with hands on hips-Who has been smoking in this bedroom! Oh well, it got the point across. The owners finally stopped smoking in the house, realtor got an air freshener machine and the house sold. Thanks Simon, Paula and Randy and especially YOU Karen. Great fun post!

That's a frightening thought Kathleen

Hi Sharon, thanks for reading - I'm a fan of Idol too, I like the weeks leading up to the actual show better though. - I can relate to Simon "says" in my family too ;-)

I'm picturing a smoke machine like atmosphere and you emerging out of the cloud Liz hands on hips... like a superstager warrior telling them like it is. Thanks for your sharing!

I believe you are correct Cindy on both accounts!

I am usually Paula for sure, with a soothing Southern accent to help the "bad medicine" go down! Except for the upscale townhome in Midtown Houston that was rented out & had dirty shoes inside the front entry, socks and mail on the stairs, questionable reading material in the bathroom, dirty dishes in the sink, used candles everywhere...I did have a "semi-Simon" meltdown because the renters were related to the homeowner and she was excusing the situation because they were bachelors!!

I love the show and watch it when I am home.  I think I am a combo but probably more like Randy.  I'd loose my mind if I was'nt.  Great analogy-you are so clever Karen!!!

Karen, what a great analogy!  I love idol but all three of them annoy me - I think they are meant to... that is great TV...  But not great consulting.  You have to combine them exactly as you say, Karen - the complete truth, said kindly, with good humor.

Karen - GREAT analogy! I also picture you like a Paula, but perhaps a little more direct. Not Simon direct though. Maybe Randy. I kind of like the new 4th judge. She'll be a good counter-balance to the female Paula perspective.

Karen this is a fun post.  Today I was being SO gentle and Paula "ish" . . . but I know the homeowner thought I was a "Simon"!  She had at least 100+ framed pictures in her little hallway . . . when I l said they needed to come down and be packed up you would have thought I was killing the beloved people in the photos -- I thought she was going to kick me out!

I like that "semi-Simon" meltdown term Kathy!

Thanks for stopping by Joanne, a good blend is important.

Hi Kim, I think I can possess qualities of all three I just try hard never to show my Simon face ;-) and I think I may end up being more like the new judge from what I've seen so far...

Too funny Margaret (cause I think many a homeowner may think that way about me even though I try very hard never to hurt feelings) - I can see where someone may feel like you were erasing those people from the wall if there were so many - obviously it was a wall of fame for her!
