It's a fact of life: You can't move forward if you keep looking back.

Pink Rose by Richard WeisserThis is not going to be a long diatribe, I'll keep it short and sweet:

You can't move forward if you keep looking back.

You can't undo mistakes of the past, you can only accept them, learn from them and move forward. There is no "Back to the Future" ability to go back, change your actions, and alter the future forever.

Never let the "What might have been" affect the "What is," because while resolution may be important to you, it may be hurtful or troublesome to those that care for you now.

Life is a chronological series of events, not a mismatched set of dishes that can be changed or replaced at will. The picture we paint of the past is often brighter than the reality.

We CAN however, successfully manipulate the present! Your future is yours to define by taking control of the here and now, but only if you can let go of what already has past.

Is it me, or does Active Rain seem like an awfully musical group to everyone else too?

Richard,

There is an awful lot of truth in your post.  We need to let go of the past and move on and chart the course to becoming a winner....

That's right Richard.  No use beating yourself up over what could have been.  I also tell myself and my daughter you learn from your mistakes.

If you haven't read "The Power of Now" I highly recommend it.  It's pretty much what you said. You only have control of the present.

Richard, another truism with the not looking back thought, is we live life going forward but understand it looking back. Looking back is helpful if only to comprehend the message of the lessons.

Richard,

You can't watch the road ahead if you keep looking in the rearview mirror. :)

There are a lot of people that believe that holding on is the hard part, but it's letting go that's the real challenge.

I know that's right!

So many things we could of done different, but we can only learn from what we did (or did not do) and work to improve.

Hi Richard, I remind myself of this almost everyday. I am the kind of person that is influenced by what has happened in the past, in my present life. I am working hard on understanding and rectifying it. Thanks for posting.

Richard, great post.  I learned this lesson from a depression I suffered some twenty years ago.  You can't kick yourself for the past.  Learn from your mistakes..whether they were intentional or unintentional.  Work toward your best and act....
