#followfriday

An interesting phrase...  I hadn't heard anything about it until just last night, and today I have been seeing it all day long.

"What is all this '#followfriday' business all about?" I asked myself...  Keep in mind that I am fairly new to Twitter.  I created my account only a few weeks ago, and I'm learning as I go.  But, this was the first time that I had seen so many people Tweeting about the same thing, so I figured it deserved a little investigation.

So I started searching...  I came across the link below and this is what I found:

http://learntoduck.com/micah/follow-friday

Micah describes how his friends Jeffrey and Danny are very intelligent, creative and humorous people to follow on Twitter, and how he thought other people would benefit from following them as well.  So he made the following Tweet:

"I am starting Follow Fridays. Every Friday, suggest a person to follow, and everyone follow him/her. Today its @fancyjeffrey & @w1redone."

Someone responded by telling him to add a "hashtag" and call it "#followfriday", and he did, and then direct messaged a few of his friends asking them to "retweet a simple message 'Follow Fridays - suggest someone to follow / everyone follow / use the hashtag #followfriday'"...

And the rest is Twistory...  ;-)

At http://search.twitter.com/   #followfriday is at number 2 in Trending Topics (at least at the time I wrote this post it was)...  I believe it!!  I've been seeing it all day long!!  But I got to wondering why it should be limited to use on Twitter?  Honestly, if the concept behind #followfriday was to let others know about someone that you think is very knowledgeable, entertaining, or helpful in someway then why not apply that here on activerain?  I think that this site has a WEALTH of very intelligent, informative, helpful and creative people, and I enjoy reading all of the blog posts here on a daily basis.  I just figured that people that share such great information on a blogging platform would probably do so on a "microblogging" platform (i.e. Twitter) as well.  So, I wrote this post in the hopes that we might make the jump from #followfriday on Twitter to #followfriday here on activerain...

I have no idea what the result of this will be, but here's what I had in mind:

1.  Think about the people you are following on Twitter.

2.  Pick a few of them that you think are particularly helpful/creative/knowledgeable/etc; the sort of people that make Twitter a worthwhile use of your time...

3.  Comment on this post with the usernames of those people, and a little background information about the person you are recommending (i.e. why he/she is such a great person to follow on twitter).

4.  Make sure that you hyperlink their usernames as I did above with "fancyjeffrey".  The link URL should be something along the lines of "http://www.twitter.com/username".

Personally, I would like to follow people that are particularly knowledgeable about real estate, mortgages, and things of that nature.  However, you don't have to limit yourselves to any particular field.

Well, there you have it...  My wacky idea...  I hope it works and that people participate because I really would like to have some true, quality people to follow on Twitter, who like to Tweet about topics that I find interesting...

I'll even start us off!!

@MikeMueller   I'd like to recommend that you all follow Mike Mueller.  I, for one, follow his blog posts, tweets, and even his updates on facebook.  He has taken time out of his day to make very good recommendations to me about my website.  I find that he quite frequently has very interesting, helpful, and entertaining things to Tweet about, and you would all be the better for following him.

I'm only going to do the one for today.  If people start to join in then I'll throw a couple more in there.

Have a great President's Day Weekend!!!
