Did you read it? A letter to Congress.

Dear Members of Congress that voted yes for The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,

We are told over and over again, don't sign anything you haven't read and don't understand. As a real estate agent when I am at the closing table with a client it is my job to make sure they understand what they are signing. If they don't I haven't done my job.

Today the House, and it looks like the Senate will as well, voted to pass a 1071 page bill less than 24 hours after they received it.

I only have one question for those of you that voted in favor of this bill today. Did you read it?

If you did not, how could you vote yes? This is the largest spending bill in the history of the United States and you didn't even take the time to know what you are voting for.

When time comes for you to run for re- election I will again ask you this question. Did you read The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 before you voted in favor of it? If you answer No, I did not read it, I will campaign for your opponent no matter who that person is. You were elected by the people to represent us. How can you represent the people you serve if you don't even take the time to understand what you are voting for?

I'm sure George Washington read the Constitution before he signed it. Don't you think you should read the bill that will change the country before you sign it?

Good for you, there has to be something illegal about our representatives signing something they haven't read. If a Realtor had of done this for someone he wouldn't have a licenses. Whether you vote yes or no at least read the damn thing. I'm fed up with the pure arrogance of these people. NAR ought to be the ones supporting their opponents somehow.

Johnnie:  I am so tired of all the unending negativity that comes out of folks like you and the rest of the right.  You yell about the spending.  Why weren't you yelling for the last eight years when your party was in control of congress ?  With all the pork you folks passed... I am sure you were all in "hog heaven."

It appears to me that McConnell and Boehner are trying to make Obama fail... so they can preach from their pulpits in 2010 that Obama failed.  You seem to be selling away your country to gain back seats in Congress.  This is honorable ?

Karen,

I don't want Obama to fail. If he does well we all do well.

I am just asking that they read what they are voting for. I didn't say anything about left or right. What would happen if they waited a few days to vote on it? Obama said on his website, during the campaign, that he would give 5 days before a bill was voted on to give public time to comment on it. This was less then 24 hours.

How true ...  I will be right there helping to un-elect these people who have sold our country down the river for personal gain. If not personal gain, why would they have done such a despicable thing?

I hear most of them did not read it or did not have adequate time to read it.  Sad but true.

Russ,

It was 1071 pages long. The full copy was released at 11pm on Thur. and the House started voting at 9 am Friday. Even if they wanted to read it they could not. Why was it pushed though so fast?

Johnnie,  EXCELLENT Post!  I flagged it for a feature.  I don't think ANYBODY with either party, should vote on something they haven't read.

@ Charles:  In the first comment above, you wrote:

I might suggest that there also has to be something illegal about our former president making speeches to our country that he knew were incorrect.  They led us into a horrible war, and into the deficit we are now faced with.  Funny how you want to trip over a pebble, yet bounce right over all the boulders of the last eight years.

I am also surprised that they were not given enough time to read and digest what they're voting on. But it certainly got a lot of press and nudging to get it passed, using bits and pieces of information as well as a bit of blame throwing and cajoling.

It's like writing an offer that's 1000 pages long, emailing it to the listing agent at 11 pm, and expecting the agent to have discussed this offer with the client, and having them accept it by 9 am the next day!

There's no way they could have digested that offer and come up with a reasonable idea of what they're voting on, and what the consequences would be.

Johnnie - Only an idiot would yes for a bill that they had not read and there are 246 idiots in the House.  The news outlets have not been spending much time reporting on the details on this bill.

Johnnie - if all else fails they can blame Bush. After all, these same people drafter TARP, passed it without reading it, and blamed Bush when it failed.
